Have you ever desired for a short, reasonable response that will please both the brain and the soul? In the pursuit of basic human rights, numerous individuals have searched for this fulfillment in religion. Webster defines religious as one`s belief in God, as well as rules used to worship a God. Since the beginning of time, religion was questioned, and it`s origin; consequently, they headed toward the sea to find some answers. Although we are not able to confirm the existence of God, we can provide proof of the power of religion.…
Religion has existed since the beginnings of humanity. People have always yearned for a divine being that is both distant and familiar to the common man. While religion stems from the spiritual teachings of a religious leader, it can also be defined merely as an outlet or activity pursued with keenness and dedication. Much like music, art, and dance, which is open to interpretation, religion allows people to escape reality. However, because of the ideas and beliefs that religion entails, it is much less tangible than other outlets and requires a different method of practice.…
C.S. Lewis’s, Mere Christianity, combined ethics and religion in an attempt to find the meaning of the universe. By focusing on the aspect of right and wrong, I was able to combine a bulk of this module’s assignments into one paper, allowing me a more comprehensive picture. Compare the thinking of the development of ethical thought through the ages: The teams built their ACU PEPs on guidelines which had already been established to build a comprehensive standard of our own for mediators. The study and development of ethics over the ages followed the same process, building upon or reacting to already established philosophies and thoughts.…
Evolutionary theory of religion Evolutionary theories of religion supposed as posing a challenge to religious belief (Sosis & Kiper, 2013). Previous research explained religion as a naturalistic perspective, without call up the actual existence of supernatural agents or events (Bering, Cronk, Gray, Johnson, McCullough, Richerson & Sosis, 2007). According to Smith & Arrow (2010), evolutionists have created three theoretical camps that view religion as nonfunctional, functional, or dysfunctional. Nonfunctional theorists concluded that religion is not an adaptation but as an alternative to an evolutionary result of nonreligious adaptations (Smith & Arrow, 2010).…
The Plea to Commence War In order to gain freedom from the despotism of the British monarchy, citizens of the United States took it into their hands to persuade the loyalists to take action against injustice. In 1775, Patrick Henry powerfully addressed the idea to commence war upon the British to resolve the issue of oppression at the Virginia Convention. He was able to conjure conflict and fear within the minds of the audience members by appealing to emotion, and making religious or authoritative remarks in front of colonists who felt enslaved by the British. Patrick Henry’s intentions were to provoke the result of the declaration of war in rage against British oppression.…
The aim of this paper is to give a detailed and succinct synopsis of Chapter four of the book titled “The Religion Toolkit.” I will begin by addressing the author’s salient arguments, and conclude by addressing questions which arise in Chapter four. In this chapter, the author discusses ways in which academic scholars have evolved in terms of how they approach the academic study of religion. The writer explains that from the beginning of the early 20th century, there was a visible shift in the academy, from the past pervasive ethnocentric approach, to an objective and balanced one.…
Religion is an outlet that grants individuals the opportunity to convey themselves through their beliefs and behaviors. It is perceived as a crucial aspect to many people’s lives, as it regulates actions and teaches individuals to abide by specific rules and morals. An individual’s mode of consciousness grants his/her mind to be aware of perception, ideas, and feelings. Such a state is intrinsically tied to one’s behavior. An individual’s environment, including the people or objects in it, has the power to influence and change one’s attitude in life.…
Chapter two, Integrative approaches to psychology and Christianity: An introduction to worldview issues, philosophical foundations, and models of integration, refers to science and religion from Roman Catholic, Protestantism, and Christianity, and whether they are friend or foe. Evidence provides, that Christians founded science to have law and reasons to support the idea God created us. Chapter three introduces the relationship between psychology and religion, explaining the differences between each religion. In each situation, the topic is heavily dependent on the dialogue and integration.…
Comprehending religion in an unbiased and thorough manner can be an ordeal that unintentionally highlights certain Western viewpoints. Although politics, economics, and psychology can be used to explain the causes human religious activity, limiting our study to solely these factors ignores a fundamental institution in which humans engage: religion. Studying the People’s Temple phenomenologically gives way to understanding it without letting societal norms cloud our judgement. Chidester’s approach to religion as “that human ability to symbolize whatever may be held to be sacred”(48) allows for a respectful study of the People’s Temple, recognizing that “religious worldviews create context for the construction of human identity” (48). Calling the People’s Temple a cult rather than embracing it as a religion dehumanizes those who believed in the ideals of the People’s Temple, stripping them of a legitimate and crucial aspect to their identities.…
I think it is totally relevant to know that a religious theorist’s family experienced religious persecution, or that another grew up with religious practices followed in convenience. Acknowledging the vastly differing backgrounds that lead to the theories presented allows us to consider the merits of each and in collusion with realistic consideration. By taking these aspects into consideration and applying them to my current opinion about religion, I found several new aspects to consider. First I will give my definition of religion; then I will explain what I feel the significance…
Alvin Plantinga is an American earned his PhD at Yale, has held the University of Notre Dame’s Chair of Philosophy since 1982. He is also a founder, and past president of the Society of Christian Philosophers. In accordance to his theist view towards exclusivism, Plantinga challenges many pluralist, one of which is the philosopher John Hick. As previous explored by Hick, the condition of an individual’s birth relates to the commitment of environmental and genetic factors towards religion.…
There is a need for constant evolution in any society, but one of the hardest things to change in any culture is the ideas of the people. The use of religion in the evolution can have great effects on the change. It can both hinder and excel the ideas of society in both the right and wrong direction. The writing of Matthew Scully, and Harriot Beecher show both the misuses of religion, and support their claims by showing how it may be used in the betterment of the world. They do this by utilizing two distinct strategies in their writings.…
Individuals want to have meaning, so religion plays that specific role by creating and preserving that for individuals in society. What Berger focuses on as important in the first part of the book is that humans need to have meaning and order. He also discusses the ways that humans function with religion as a way to shield themselves. In the second part of the book Peter Berger examines, the process of secularization and how it can have an impact on religious traditions involving individuals within society.…
For centuries, religion has been a topic of great debate and interest, stemming from the validity of ideals to reasons why people believe in it in the first place. Despite all the efforts over time to thwart religion, it has managed to remain as a prominent structure. One question that seems to always be brought to the table is how religion continues to exist in light of the continual advances of science. The reason religion continues to exist today is not because the furthering of science leads to disproving religion, but rather because religion addresses questions that currently not even the advances of science can answer, giving people a sense of unity and congregation based upon two key emotions: hope and fear.…
If we “peel away” all of these constructs and trace religion back to its origins, we will find that there is nothing to peel away any more and that religion is simply…
