There were two people per canoe, so everyone had to pick another scout. The six friends split into three teams being Charlie and Keith, Joey and Kurt, and James and nick. After an hour or so of canoeing came the first portage. Each group had to carry their canoe filled with gear a mile to the next lake. The purpose of the main character’s journey was to reach Henderson Creek where people he referenced as ‘the boys’ already were. It was never mentioned if they were friends, family, or both. To the main character, ‘the boys’ seemed to represent where his guarantee of warmth, food, and safety waited for him. The reason that the main character was not with ‘the boys’ was that, “They had come across the divide from the Indian Creek country, while he had come the roundabout way to look at the possibilities of getting out logs in the spring from the islands in the Yukon” (London 2). The main character made many errors and mistakes along the way that led to his death.…

Slowly, I took on more responsibility positions both in and out of Scouting, imparting my own amazing experience in Philmont onto the younger scouts and leading my fellow students as co-founder of Sustainability Club. Following my contributions in the Pancake Breakfast, I took a year-long hiatus from Scouting to focus on my studies, taking multiple AP classes to help supplement my interests. After the impromptu break, when I rejoined and revisited the enjoyment I experienced from my Philmont trek, I affirmed myself as a Scout for life, as I saw the positive influence the program had on me and knew that Scouting could guide me to become a better citizen of the community. Largely responsible for introducing me to my leadership abilities and individual morals, Scouting has shaped my character through my experiences with…

In the short story, “From B’wood to the Hood” the author Ryan Smith talks about the struggle of moving from one side of town to the other side. The first thing that stuck out to me in the story was when the author says, “I broke the news to my mother that I was moving from Brentwood to the hood”. This reminds me of when I recently decided to tell my mom that I was moving to Denver, Colorado from Lancaster, PA. Although she did take the news better than I thought, she still tried to talk me out of moving. She eventually started to support me with my new endeavor in life and she wound up driving out to Colorado with me the last week of July. Another thing that popped out at me while reading was “my father separated from my mom”.…

Fox News had written an article about this situation titled “Eagle Scout: RIP Boy Scouts of America. You were great for 100 years.” Already by the title, Fox News got the timing wrong since when Boy Scouts was created. Boy Scouts was created in January 24,1908 making it 108 years old to this day, not 100. The article however, does have a similar contrast within the actual Boy Scout slogan which they quote “...growing boys into young men, and young men into leaders”(Patten 3).…
