The Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest youth organizations in the nation, having an astounding 2.4 million youth involved in its programs. Since 2007 I have been lucky to consider myself one of those members. Starting in third grade, I joined as a Bear Cub, in the Cub Scout program, and have made my way from there up to the highest rank in Boy Scouts, Eagle.
When I started my journey I was a fairly quiet kid, reserved and not very good at controlling a group. The Boy Scouts program especially helped me to improve my public speaking and leadership qualities early on. After quickly advancing through the first few ranks, I was put into a position of leadership within a year of joining Boy Scout Troop 1360. In this position as Patrol Leader, I was in charge of a group of about 10 other boys, as well as leading the entire troop in weekly skill instruction and games. From this early leadership experience, I moved on to be a Troop Guide, or a sort of mentor for the first year scouts. In this position, my duty was to help the first year scouts advance in rank and learn the basic skills they would need for camping and other scout activities. Eventually I worked my way up to Senior Patrol Leader, where I was put in charge of the troop as a whole. For my project I chose to build a fence and gate for the elementary school that I attended. At the time, the playground that many of the youngest kids there played on had a set of stairs that kids would accidentally fall down at times, so by request I organized the construction of a fence to prevent this from happening. With help from scout leaders with some experience in fences I designed a plan for the fence, and gathered the materials, before leading other scouts in its
