Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Ignorance

Is ignorance bliss? Or is it actually reason for concern? I definitely believe that a high level of ignorance can be quite dangerous. The novel “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne gives many examples of the dangers that may come with ignorance, in ways such as being ignorant towards someone’s feelings, the ignorance shown in terrorist acts and the simple yet often life-threatening ignorance that often occurs with children.
One of the most common forms of ignorance is something that is performed nearly every day and by every person. Most people tend to show a lack of concern as to how another person is feeling. Being ignorant towards someone’s feelings can be as simple as a disagreement with a friend and not keeping in mind how they may feel about the critique that you are giving them. The recently publicised executions of American reporter James Foley and even more recent Steven Sotloff by a member of the Islamic State have caused widespread reasons for concern by the U.S. The executions follow the American led aerial bombings of cities including Iraq, in which the ISIS largely populate. The ISIS militant group is led largely by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. He is the leader of up to 80,000 fighters and terrorists, many of them manipulated by him into believing that they are fighting for the good of their country and religion. Many of the fighters do not know the severity of the crimes they are causing, not dissimilar to the crimes that were being in Germany during the Second World

Many people live by the phrase “knowledge is power” while others comfortably believe in the saying “ignorance is bliss”. According to Juan D. Carrillo and Thomas Mariotti, some people would rather be ignorant because “voluntary ignorance [can] be used as a self-control device preventing the individual from embarking in a hazardous activity which he [or she] could later regret,” (Carillo and Mariotti 1). These people believe that ignorance is truly blissful because knowing an abundant amount of information about a topic, or even a person, can be severely detrimental on the state of mind. One of these fervent believers is Daisy Buchanan, a major character in the novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald.…

It was a few years ago when I was young and wise, that someone my age but older stood and claimed jubilantly, "Ignorance is Bliss", the wonderfully dreadfully, perfect mistake people make. What is so blissful about not knowing, better yet, purposely not wanting to know truth? The idea that Ignorance is Bliss makes sense to most, I mean, yeah, the truth can hurt but think about it. Removing a band-aid fast is far better than doing so in a slow and agonizingly painful manner. The difference with knowing is that pain is temporary, pain is understood, pain shapes the future.…

Al Shabaab was the first terrorist organization to use an American citizen to conduct a suicide bombing mission more than five years ago. Since then, the group has consistently targeted civilians and non-combatants to achieve their goals and has continued to attract Americans and other foreigners to its ranks. The group controls a large swath of territory in southern and central Somalia which enables the group to train and operate freely without any real interference. It has managed to survive amid the array of other terrorist groups that come and go in the region and has grown from a regional threat to an international one. Ignorance can stifle learning, especially if the ignorant person believes that they are not ignorant. A person who falsely believes he or she is knowledgeable will not seek out clarification of his or her beliefs, but rather rely on his or her ignorant position. He or she may also reject valid but contrary information, neither realizing its importance nor understanding it. This concept is elucidated in Justin Kruger's and David Dunning's work, "Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments," otherwise known as…

Ignorance is a very dangerous emotion. Ignorance not only becomes dangerous when people do not think before they act but also when people let themselves be a part of demeaning life situations due to being blind of an entire situation. Blind love is an example of such ignorance; people will do anything for love without thinking, even if it ultimately hurts them. It has been said that sometimes love requires sacrifice, which can be true to an extent. Healthy sacrifice occurs when a person sacrifices their time or maybe goes to a boring event to make their partner happy, which in turn makes them happy.…

Tolstoy states that ignorance, “consists in not knowing, not understanding, that life is an evil and an absurdity” (Tolstoy). He says that mainly women and young children are subject to the category of ignorance. He views these groups of people as not being capable of pondering ideas as complex as the meaning of life. They take pleasure in licking the honey and live life in a state of ignorant bliss. But Tolstoy also states that people can only stay in a state of ignorance for so long, “something will turn their attention to the dragon and the ice, and there will be an end to they're licking”…
