One of the books I read this quarter was a novel named The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. This novel is 216 pages long and it took me a little over a week to read. This novel is told in 3rd Person Limited point of view. The setting takes place during World War Ⅱ in 1942 near a concentration camp in Germany. In a nutshell, this book is about a nine-year old boy named Bruno whose father is a Nazi officer who gets a job as the commander of a concentration camp and the whole family must move to a house near the camp where Bruno meets one of the prisoners and they become friends. This friendship then leads to many adventures and a very sad tragedy. I definitely believe that this book is worth reading because it teaches you about our nation’s …show more content…
When Shmuel brought Bruno the pajamas, Bruno thought “It didn’t look particularly clean but it was a disguise, and Bruno knew that good explorers always wore the right clothes”(Boyne 202). Bruno’s apotheosis finally came when he reminded himself that he had to do this for his friend whom he may never see again. Knowing this, he bravely climbed under the fence and stealthily started looking for any evidence or clues that could help him find out where Shmuel’s father was. Bruno thought, “He had promised his friend that [he was going to help Shmuel find his father] and he wasn’t the sort to go back on a promise, especially when it was the last time they were going to see each other” (Boyne 208-209). The ultimate boon hit after they searched for a couple hours and Bruno grew weary and knew that he had to go home soon, so he started heading toward the fence when all of the Jews were ordered to march. “March? I can’t go on a march. I have to be home in time for dinner. It’s roast beef tonight”(Boyne 210) said Bruno when the men were asked to march. It started to rain as they marched and Bruno was afraid that he wouldn’t get home on time for dinner and that his family would get worried. He didn’t have to march in the rain for long luckily for him, for the men were told to go into a warm room where not a single raindrop could enter. It was this …show more content…
My book interests are also changing I believe because of my age. I used to really like adventure and fantasy books, but now I am more into survival stories or tragedies mainly because it opens my eyes to how much worse my life could be compared to others even though they may be fictional characters. My habits while reading this book is that I read around three to four chapters per reading period steadily for a little over a week. I read about 85% of the book at school during the reading periods at this pace and I read the rest over a weekend. Another book I have read this quarter is Hate List by Jennifer Brown. This novel is also a survival story and it is about a young girl named Valerie whose boyfriend started a school shooting of all the people that were on this hate list that he and Valerie made when they were mad. It then talks about how Valerie has to cope with being known as the girl that is responsible for the shooting and the deaths of the many students that were shot. Overall it’s a really great read and a very inspiring story. My reading has greatly surprised me with the fact that I can now read in slightly louder areas which is a great improvement for me because I used to only be able to read in extremely quiet areas which wasn’t very easy for me to do all the time and my reading definitely suffered because of this. Some goals that I have set for myself was to

This book is a good book because of the visualizations, which is a necessity in a book like this due to most readers never experiencing this traitorous journey. I also appreciate the careful pairing of characters. There is a victim everyone can relate to in this book. There are lovers, overworked coworkers, friends, and more. I like that this helps the reader connect to the book, even though the experiences aren’t the same the victims are everyday people.…

The book is about two best friends, one who’s very happy, good at athletics, and the other who is very smart, but he’s so envious and bitter towards his friend, to the point where this jealousy completely consumes him and he becomes so full of envy and hatred, he actually intentionally hurts him. So I think one of the biggest lessons from this book, is to not let jealousy take control of you, or act on it. And that’s one of the reasons why I love this book so much, because of the lessons that come with it, and also how much I can relate to the main character. We share the same flaw, which is how jealous both of us can get, even over the littlest things, and this book really helped me cope with that in a…

When reading this book, it takes you into a whole nother world, and makes it seem like you are right there with Yanek. The book shows you what it means to step up to the plate when needed. Also, it teaches the reader how to face problems head on. One moment in the story that taught me a lesson, was when Yanek lost his parents to the Nazis, but he still wanted to survive. This showed me that you should never give up.…

Bruno is visually representing himself trying to hold onto the belief that his dad is a good man as that belief slips away. Bruno is still trying to fit in with two groups of people that can be seen as polar opposites during World War II: the Nazis and the Jews. He’s expressing how he wants to belong to both of these groups at once, buts he’s struggling to see the Nazis as virtuous people that he wants to belong with. Since Bruno wants to fit in with a group of more agreeable people, the struggle will end in Bruno not fitting in with his father and other individuals like him. This fits in to the bigger theme of how individuals want to be viewed as similar to the group we belong with, whether to look cool or to look like a better…

There is nothing from this book that I can apply to my life, or that I have learned from to make myself better. There were some similarities between myself and the main characters but I couldnt find myself learning anything from it. There are people who can relate and would very much enjoy this story. Someone around the age of the Cadence, has been through a tragedy that they were part of the cause and is having to find out on their own what happen. I can't think of anyone, besides younger kids, who shouldn't read this book the amount of strong language is very small so any level of high schoolers or even kids in middle school could read and enjoy this…

Animal Farm by George Orwel and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas by John Boynare are a kind of books which I will reread over and over again throughout my whole life, because every time my understanding and of them will be different. Both books are wide open to the reader's imagination and have humongous amounts of symbols in them, which could be comprehended as different things depending on the reader's beliefs and previous general/historical knowledge. Even though, the two books are completely different in style, authors, topics/theme and even genre they can be connected and both subtly show the problems with a community which strives to be utopian, however, end up being dystopian. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas by John Boynare I must…

Widespread anti semitism in Europe led to such atrocities as the Holocaust. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a story told through the point of view of Bruno, an eight year old boy whose father is a Nazi commander based in Germany, not far from a concentration camp. Bruno, disobeying orders, goes out wandering and finds Shmuel, a Jewish boy on the other side of the fence in the camp. The two become unlikely friends, often playing on opposite sides of the fence and sharing food. During much of the story Jews are talked down upon.…
