Popular novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, revolves around a young, eight-year-old boy, Bruno, who lives in Germany during World War II. The novel starts off with Bruno coming home to find one of his family’s servants, Maria, packing his clothes. After talking to their mother, Bruno and his twelve-year-old sister, Gretel, learn that the whole family and their servants will be moving to the country for Bruno’s father’s job, which evidently involves someone named “The Fury”. When Bruno, his family, and the servants arrive at the new house, Bruno notices that the house seems to be lonely, with no other houses by it, and that he will lonely as well, as he cannot see any boys to play with. The view from Bruno’s window is at first full of flowers and plants; it is a typical garden view, but after a little distance, everything changes. A large, high wire fence stands on the ground. Beyond the fence there is no grass or greenery, low huts, about two smoke stacks, and people dressed in striped pajamas. After seeing these strange people through the window, Bruno talks to his father and brings up his questions about them. Bruno’s father replies, saying that they are not people and Bruno should not worry about the people too much. Several weeks later, Bruno encounters his first glimpse at the unfair way some Germans treated certain people. Bruno, wanting to build a tire swing, asks a German lieutenant, Lieutenant Kotler, who was at Bruno’s house, to help. Instead of helping Bruno, Lieutenant Kotler commissions one of the servants, Pavel to help Bruno. The lieutenant commanded Pavel and added a word Bruno did not comprehend, but inferred to disrespectful. After building the swing and swinging for a considerable amount of time, Bruno’s grip on the tire loosens and he falls of the swing, which severely scratches Bruno’s elbow and
