Boy In The Striped Pajamas Propaganda

The movie, “The Boy in Striped Pajamas” is about a young boy, Bruno, and his journey during World War Two. The movie starts out with Bruno and his family moving out of Berlin for his father’s work. His father works as an officer for the Nazi party, choosing to take up residence, as we soon find out, near a concentration camp. When Bruno and his family first move to this new house, Bruno finds himself very bored and lonely. Bruno then takes it upon himself to sneak out of the gate in order to explore (as he does want to be an explorer when he grows up). This is when eight year old Bruno stumbles upon a concentration camp where he meets similarly-aged Shmuel, the “odd” Jewish boy in the striped “pajamas”. It had many subtle hints that showed the viewer how different people were affected by the Holocaust. It also showed the fact that a many people involved with the defending of the Nazi party were not aware of the horrors going on. We see this by the wife’s questioning of the bad smell when the chimneys ignited and the propaganda film shown to the soldiers that depicted the concentration camp as lovely and nice. Moreover, the film pulled at viewer’s heart strings as we watched not only the brutal mistreatment of the Jewish people, but also as the relationship of Bruno and Shmuel grew, only ending with death due to great naitivity. Yes, viewers watched in horror as his father spouted lies to his family, berated Jews, beat servants due to one wrong move, and the gassing of unexpecting and innocent victims. Overall, this movie was gruesome but showed those who could stomach it how much the holocaust as well as World War Two took over people’s lives, made them obsessed, and ultimately killed; even if this was unknown by many.
