It is completely normal for children to be unaware of what is happening around them and they often refer to prior knowledge for a further understanding. Bruno and Shmuel were both naïve and innocent about what was happening to both of them. Bruno thought his father was a good soldier who helped people and Shmuel thought his father was still alive. They also both referred to prior knowledge which made them think that they understood what was occurring around them. For instance, Bruno didn’t know that the blue striped clothes that Shmuel was wearing were actually prison clothes; he thought that they were striped pajamas. Also, when Bruno and Shmuel were put into the gas chamber at Auschwitz, Bruno thought that they were just in there to be covered from the rain.
In conclusion, the Boy in the striped pajamas by John Boyne is a book about a relationship of 2 naïve and innocent young boys who are completely different yet so similar. Bruno’s and Shmuel’s nativity led them to an awful death. They died together in Auschwitz as friends and the last thing Bruno said was: “You’re my best friend Shmuel, my best friend for life.” Although everyone is different, we all relate in some
