The concept of individual sacrifice for the greater good, ‘our land’ and community is an ideal held high in many cultures and this is no different to Chinese culture, past and present. The movie Hero displays this concept during the time in which china was a handful of separate country-states, known as ‘the warring states period’. Although there are the ideals of ‘our land’ in the film there is also the fact that community and uniting china is not an ideal that is liked by all. To display this point the beginning of the film opens with the quote “people give their lives for many reasons. For Friendship, for love, for an ideal.…

Since the birth of the Declaration of Independence, Americans have had a sense of pride that separates us from the rest of the world. America’s sense of nationalism and patriotism is a cornerstone of our society. Patriotism, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is a noun that means love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it. Many authors of poems and short stories, as well as many novelists lace their literary works with chauvinism. Appealing to a large portion of Americans, this tone can evoke emotions and passion in a reader.…

Bao 's identity was not fulfilling in the end because he lost sight of taking care of others, he became the tyrant instead of the christians. Even though both Bao and Vibiana were raised in the same part of China and grew up under the same reign, their identities went opposite ways which in the end lead them to be on opposing sides. Vibiana was willing to die for her faith in the end because of learning to be mindful of others, she identified in Christ. While Bao was afraid of death because he only had an identity in the living world, among the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists, as a leader who showed no mercy. Indeed, when laying claim to an identity, one must remember that we are all influenced by those around us and that without compassion and understanding of others, one will never be at peace with…

In the United States, respect and admiration for one’s nation is too often associated exclusively with Americans. During the Festival of Nations, an international event held in Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, MO, my peers and I were able to see the pride foreign nationals and naturalized American citizens take in their home nations, while at the same time realizing the great degree to which other cultures’ staples are “Americanized.” I believe the most enriching parts of the Festival of Nations came from simply observing the different visitors, patrons, and cultures. While, of course, there were guests dressed in shorts and tee-shirts, there were also women wearing elaborately patterned African dresses, old men who appeared to be of Eastern…

It is a generally accepted fact that the people love the soil they are born on. However, in oppressed dictatorships and tyranny rules , the people who once had faith in their homeland may become emotionally depressed and start cursing their fate of being born in that particular country. Thus, these forms of governments can greatly have an adverse effect on one’s devotion to his birthplace which gives way to little or no patriotism. On the other hand, in a democratic form of government, everyone has their say in the leadership and they have access to human rights. Thus, this equity in the society together with the love of homeland creates such patriotism that is not apparent in any other forms of government.…
