Although he does not have a lot of time to spend freely, Boxer always puts his job before himself. While the other animals were using their resting time, Boxer would keep on working on the tasks that he could manage alone. “In his spare moments, of which there were not many nowadays, he would go alone to the quarry, collect a load of broken stone, and drag it down to the site of the windmill unassisted”(61, 62). By showing leadership from working hard, the animals of the farm look up towards Boxer as a figure of unlimited strength and a source of support when times get tough. When the animals feel like they can not carry on their task, Boxer is always there to help them. “Nothing could have been achieved by Boxer, whose strength seemed equal to that of all the rest of the animals put together. When the boulder began to slip and the animals cried out in despair at finding themselves dragged down the hill, it was always Boxer who strained himself against the rope and brought the boulder to a stop” (61). By stopping the large rock from going down any farther, the horse helps stop the animals from starting from the beginning again. If Boxer had not been there, the animals would have had to start the arduous process over again. With the herculean horse besides them, the animals feel more at ease.
