Wow, was day one or Thursday a crazy day. I’m not even sure where to start!!! When I came up onto the floor; the floor seemed very busy. This was due to the three floor being closed. Unfortunately, my nurse couldn’t give me report and was very busy putting in orders. So I took the time to look at the patient medical record but I feel like there is never time to know everything I want about our patients. As soon as I was done with that I found out that I had a ton of piggy backs for my one patient that my nurse just input into the computer. Since I had Magnesium and Potassium and an antibiotic to be infused at the same time. I had to put in another IV catheter and get a new primary set, 0.9 NS solution and some secondary tubing. I was a bit stressed on this night. My blood pressure was very low and I was not feeling so great from that. So I’m so glad I made it through the night and everything was ok! My other patient had to drink her go-lytely for bowel prep. I had to keep reminding her to drink it because the day before she was not doing that and her colonoscopy was cancel. Other than that my patient just needed some education on her nasal spray and assessment. My other patient, he really didn’t want to be bother by me. For him, I group all his medical care into brunches so I didn’t bug him. I felt like he was afraid to have me as a nurse but I’m not sure why? I showed confients in everything I did and ask him if anything was wrong when he show this body language. I had an IV push for him and make sure I had this ready very early in advance. I have always been told by my patients that I very easy to get along with and very caring. For some reason I just couldn’t get a good therapeutic relationship with him. For day one I really had to learn priotiozing and how to move quickly. Things happening very quickly that night and you had to reassess what was more important a

The liver which is the largest organ in the body produces bile and stores glucose. Likewise, the pancreas produces pancreatic juices which contain sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and digestive enzymes for all types of food. The gallbladder, on the other hand, is a storage for bile that is produced by the liver. This information can be found on pages 649-651. These answers are correct because the bile produced by the liver emulsifies fat and blood glucose remains constant.…

I went to the Assistant Nurse Manager about my dilemma. She spoke with the health care provider and got the order changed to a CADD pump, which is managed by the IV team and will give the patient a bolus rate. She then informed the family of the new order, which they all were comfortable with. This was a true ethical…

Hi Rupinder, I really enjoyed your post and the strategies you suggested. I especially liked the breakdown of the different patient types that we will encounter. From the reading your post and Lalaine’s response to this discussion, I realized how flexible and adaptively we have to be as health care providers. We never know who enters our exam room that day and what may be going on in their personal life. Even with the same patient, each encounter may vary.…

Yesterday in clinical I was on the labor and delivery unit. As everyone know, mom and baby is not my preference. For me, the problem is not caring for mom or even seeing a delivery, it is caring for the tiny baby. I wanted to be on the labor and delivery side because I hoped to see a delivery. There was one delivery on the unit, but unfortunately the mom was not receptive to having a student in the room.…

Reimbursement of services provided by hospitals is becoming increasingly dependent on patient satisfaction scores. Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys are used to determine patient satisfaction. Most of the questions in this survey are directly related to patient care. Prior to going into the room my nurse asked me to make sure I walked every single IV line and tube to make sure there were no kinks or obstructions. I began to do what she asked but I was a little overwhelmed from the amount of lines on the IV pole. Some lines were not running so I asked her if I could declutter the pole and we did this together. I realized that keeping an organized pole makes a world of a difference when it comes to assessing each line. Caring for my patient was not as overwhelming to me as I expected, what was overwhelming was the amount of charting that needs to be done.…

This week in clinical, me and another nursing student were assigned to go and visit the PACU. All patients are admitted to the PACU, Post-anesthesia care unit, following surgery. We visited the PACU in the first week of clinical, so I was familiar with the environment. When I first walked into the PACU it was empty, but the nurse told me just give it a few minutes it is going to get busy. I was assigned to be with a nurse for the day and observe how she takes care of patients after surgery is completed.…

I have focused this reflection assignment on an issue I was faced with during my third year placement in an acute hospital on a surgical ward. I felt very uneasy and awkward throughout the entire experience. I have focused on one issue that stood out the most for me and discussed this in detail. The issue was that my communication skills were ineffective due inexperience. I had not dealt with a patient experiencing a miscarriage until this placement which made me feel unprepared.…

Today was my first day on Female Surgical Ward. The day’s objective was to perform head to toe assessment. Firstly, my preceptor introduced herself and then introduced us to the staff, before reviewing the objectives. After this, we were placed in pairs and went by a patient to perform head to toe assessment. I was relaxed and felt at ease because I had performed a head to toe assessment before, on a patient in Female Medical Ward, and in Simulation Labs.…

It gave me a feeling of rejection in the new environment and I kept thinking of various reasons that could be possible for their behavior. I thought they might be doing this because we are coming from overseas. After this event I did some research on how overseas nurses feel in Australia during their initial clinical postings. I realized that everyone felt scared at first. Another reason which came to my mind is that due to staff shortage or having an additional overhead of observing a student might have triggered this…
