Boundaries of Competence
Counsellors help their clients in a variety of ways and there are many different types of counsellors depending on their speciality. For example, there is Marriage and Family counsellor, Guidance and Career counsellor and Mental health counsellor just to name a few. These different types of counsellors require specialized studies in specific courses in order to use their specific techniques although some will overlap. Section A3 of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) states that counsellors’ must restrict their counselling services to those areas within the boundaries of their competence by virtue of verifiable education, training, supervised experience, and other professional experience.
