Boundaries In The Silence Of The Lambs

Boundaries are what people put up and dare not to cross or to cross. They are put up for protection or as a challenge. The movie The Silence of the Lambs explores the first of these two reasons. The movie features Agent Clarice Starling, an FBI agent in training who is given a difficult case that will either make or break her future reputation, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychologist that has become a psychopathic and cannibalistic serial killer, and Buffalo Bill, a man that is convinced that he is a transexual woman and becomes a serial killer that collects female victims so that he may skin them and use the skin to make a bodysuit for himself. The movie pushes the limits of boundaries by focusing on how far one is willing to go to for the greater …show more content…
This segment of disorder is characterized by a lack of emotion and regret, as well as unrestrained and aggressive actions (Myers, 2011). According to R. Blair, psychopathy is created from a lack of moral development associated with the inability to restrain aggression (1995). Dr. Lecter fits into the category of psychopathy because of the fact that he was able to harm the nurse without his heart rate rising to a rate that would be equivalent to a struggle. His body did not react in a way synonymous with regret or anger. Throughout the movie, Dr. Lecter also makes many insensitive remarks to Agent Starling and asks inappropriate questions about Agent Starling’s torn childhood. He fits the description of psychopathy because he does not consider, nor care about, Agent Starling’s feelings. He also lashes out in extremely unrestrained violence, thus proving the psychopathic theory. Buffalo Bill is the main antagonist in The Silence of the Lambs. He is a serial killer that is convinced that he is a transexual woman and this motivates him to create a skin suit. Dr. Lecter claims that he is a psychopath in association with with having post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Lecter voices this opinion in a scene midway through the movie, around 0:55:00, when he explains that Buffalo Bill was not born the way he was but rather was created as a psychopath as a result of his abusive childhood. Dr. Lecter further explains that he acts the way he does in order to cope with his how he was

`Psychopathic personality' was once widely used but was superseded by `sociopathic personality' to indicate the social aspects of the disorder, but now `antisocial personality disorder' is the preferred term. The term psychopath is commonly used incorrectly in the media to describe someone who has done something considered “evil.” Terrorists, mass killers and bombers often get labeled with this term before anyone has caught them, let alone had time to make an assessment of them. It’s become shorthand for people who do terrible things, and that disconnect from the reality of the situation is a problem in the way we view people and their actions. By labeling someone a psychopath, it’s easy to write them off as evil and never look at the actual factors that go into their actions.…

This is exactly what killer Edmund Kemper used against his victims before committing numerous, heinous acts upon them and their corpora. Not only has Kemper been infamously used as an inspiration for many films and television shows, he also serves as a constant reminder to young women across the country to stay away from strangers. Like many literary characters we’ve read about such as Macbeth, The Co-Ed Killer has brought our nightmares to life starting when he was just a young child.…

Many believe both words pertain to the same disorder, and some believe that the two are entirely different. Countless interviews with doctors and diagnosed psychopaths and sociopaths have only succeeded in making the question of whether there is a difference between the two even more of a mystery. There are more than enough theories of their apparent difference, but no substantial evidence.…
