EGG LAB ANALYSIS
Bouncy egg trick:
You turn an egg into a bouncy ball by leaving the egg in vinegar. on the first day we place the egg into vinegar which helps break down the eggshell. Vinegar is a acid which dissolves the eggshell, which is made of calcium carbonate, turning the shell to carbon dioxide.
Vocab/ Relation
Osmosis: diffusion of water
Diffusion: molecules to spread out in order to occupy an available space, without using energy. *diffuse from high to low. -The egg was placed into water and the egg expanded because of osmosis and diffusion. there was more water outside the egg so some of it had to go in.
Active Transport:molecules spread against the concentration gradient. this uses energy, and requires help from carrier proteins. * moves from low to high.

Hypotonic: more within, the water will go according to osmosis.
Isotonic: same amount on both sides, equilibrium. -When the egg was placed into corn syrup it was hypotonic and shriveled up and when it was in the water it was hypertonic and the water moved into the egg.
Cell Membrane Research:
University of Michigan studies show that in the beginning of the year cell membranes could be beneficial to alzheimer's treatment. U-M explains “Center parts of neuron all membranes allow proteins to kill the cells and destroy the ability to make and retain memories” (Science Daily 1). They used MRI machines to look at tissues in the cellular membrane. The phospholipid bilayer is identical to the cell membrane in neurons. The U-M team is trying to find ways to incorporate this into treatments.
Components of Cell Membrane:
Phospholipid Bilayer- made of phosphate and fatty acids move gas and allow water and nonpolar molecules to pass.
Glycolipid- makes the membrane more fluid
Peripheral Protein- go all the way through the bilayer
Integral Proteins- called transport proteins large molecules use proteins to help move across the
