Boule De Suif
Boule De Suif meaning ?dumpling?, ?butterball? or ?ball of fat? is a famous short story by the French writer Guy De Maupassant. It is set in the France - Prussian War time period around the 1870?s. Following ten French residents from the town of Rouen, who were once occupied by the Prussian army. The travelers decide to leave their town of Rouen and travel to Le Havre in a stagecoach. Bad weather conditions will make their travels long and crucial.

They realize that they are in Prussian held territory after hearing a German voice. A Prussian officer keeps watch of the group during their stay. After two days of being very impatient of being detained Boule De Suif finally tells them they are being held until she agrees to sleep with the officer. Boule is called upon the officer many times during the day and comes back very irritated.
The travelers begin to support her and grow angry towards the officer for his arrogance. Then they begin to become furious towards Boule for not sleeping with the officer. Over the next two days the travelers try to convince Boule that it is okay and is the right thing to do. Boule De Suif finally decides to sleep with him and the officer lets the group leave the next morning. Boule felt shame and was embarrassed when she faced the group of people. While the travelers began to start on their way to Le Havre again conversation grew, but Boule was ignored. They all had food but would not share it with her the way she did them earlier. Cornudet began to whistle the Marseillaise (the national anthem of France) and he noticed it made her uncomfortable. Boule began to sob with anger towards the group and at the fact she has lost her
