Bottom is looked at as a blowhard, a bully and a fool while the craftsmen find him admirable. They shouldn’t find him admirable because what people see in Bottom is actually true. In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. Bottom shows his arrogance by thinking that he is best suited for all the roles in the play. He is greedy because he takes all the gifts that Titania offers him. He is doubtful about his friendships because they all ran away As a result of arrogance, greed and doubtful disposition, it is evident that Bottom is not a sympathetic character. Bottom shows that he has a little bit of an ego. He thinks that he can play all the roles in the production. This was shown when Peter Quince assigned the roles to the craftsmen, he wanted to play everyone’s role instantly thinking of how he can play their roles, instead of …show more content…
The craftsmen ran away from Bottom because of fear. They ran away from him because when Bottom came back on the “stage” during practice, they saw how scary he looked and instantly ran away from him feeling no sympathy that they left him. Making Bottom just stay there and wonder why they left because he was unaware of why they ran. This shows that his friendship is doubtful is that if they really like Bottom, and if they really do feel sympathy for him they wouldn’t run away from, they would’ve stayed there and told him that he looked really ugly or scary. Bottom isn’t a good friend either because instead of running after them, he just stood there confused. A good friend would of ran after them and wondered why they left and what was wrong with them. He could have asked them what was wrong, but he didn’t he just stood there and continued practicing by himself. True friends would stay by each other’s side no matter what. Bottom didn’t stand their side and showed the lack of character he had, make the craftsmen run away not feeling sympathetic at

Bottom's transformation into an inverted centaur with a donkeys head, had not only exemplified his persona as the plays fool, but has shown that the boundaries between man and animal are slim indeed. Following the awakening of Bottom and his proceeding speech on "Man is but an ass..." it draws attention to humans failure to communicate and perceive the world outside their physicality(4.1.205). By repeating man 7 times only reiterates mans vanity in attempting to comprehend the world as viewed through their eyes, stressing the inevitability of anthropocentrism and the impossibility of objectivity because of man's self envy. Our interpretation of the world is only restricted by our position within it, were man tries to comprehend the incomprehensible, and thus becoming a fool. The function of the fairies in Midsummer's adds to the quandary in the relations between human and nonhuman.…

Bottom) with the head of an ass sleeping on a bed of flowers which incorporates ironic and satirical comedy and secondly Bottom 's somewhat serious blind acceptance, ‘I cry your worship 's mercy heartily: I beseech your worships name, ' in his ignorant state, can be considered comic to a very great extent indeed. Therein can be made a riper point, ‘I pray you, commend me to Mistress Squash, your mother, ' expresses Bottom 's urgency to make a good impression on his hapless servants by meeting their parents and hitherto making a display of adapting to King which is once again an exemplification of dramatic irony by Shakespeare causing a whimsical reaction from the audience as we know Bottom cannot be King, despite his sanguine ignorance. Shakespeare 's use of Bottom for comic effect in the extract is crucial therefore for the theme of naivety because…

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Nick Bottom undergoes a bewildering transformation. When his head is turned into that of a donkey’s, this helps to not only forward the plot, but serves a figurative meaning as well. Shakespeare himself seems to acknowledge as much in the play’s dialogue – “I see their knavery: this is to make an ass of me” (Act III, Scene 1, Line 940) – skillfully crafting irony to drive home the point of Bottom as the butt (or “ass,” if you will) of the play’s biggest comedy gag. Bottom himself, however, remains almost entirely oblivious to the exact nature and true extent of his transformation, as does another key character he comes to interact with later on: Titania. The fairy queen unconsciously becomes smitten with the donkey-headed…

William Shakespeare’s complex use of imagery and symbolism is what drives his work from being a rudimentary play to an artistic expression of emotions. A typical play from Shakespeare often holds love and romance as a central theme, which applies to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. On the surface, A Midsummer Night’s Dream portrays itself as a romantic comedy combined with mystical works and lover’s desires, all of which is played under the moonlight. However, a deeper exploration into the work reveals an acute symbolism through the Moon that manages to unify the play as a whole.…

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, there are two prominent settings with opposing forces that are central to the context of the play. These two different settings explain Shakespeare’s underlying messages and themes that he wanted to convey to his audience. The setting the readers are introduced to first, Athens, is meant to represent the harshness of the real world, while the other main location, the forest, has a more lovable and happier notion. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the dissimilarities of the setting enhance the mood and conflicts, represent different ideas and themes, and portray Shakespeare’s personal ideas about how true love can overcome obstacles, especially with the help of imagination and altered minds.…
