“Botswana is a country located in southern Africa. Geographically the country is flat and up to 70% of Botswana is covered by the Kalahari Desert.” A small, landlocked country of just over two million people, Botswana is divided into 16 districts – 10 rural districts and 6 urban districts.” (n.d.).http://www.mapsofworld.com/botswana/facts/). It’s beautiful, and has a colorful culture. Botswana is perceptibly populated. However faces a few diseases. Here I will explain their culture, and history. What travelers may need before taking a trip to the Botswana Safari, even prevention awareness, also the diseases that can be very risky of getting?
The History and Culture
In the early 1820’s, the country was disarray by the development of the Zulu1 and their offshoot, the Ndebele2. A new threat arose in the 19th century, takeover of the Boers (Afrikaner) from the neighboring Transvaal3. Culture
The Botswana’s believed human kind and the other animals and plants were the creation of spiritual entities. “For those that still follow a traditional belief system, ancestral worship is central to their daily religious practice, as it is believed that, if appeased, the ancestors will protect the family, strengthen the community and keep away ill omens.” (n.d.).http://www.mapsofworld.com/botswana/facts/)
They perform seasonal rituals that they believe makes the ancestors happy to keep them protected, in various aspects of their life. The London Missionary Society5 first group started operating in Botswana in the early 1800‘s, educational institutions were established then. While the 1/3 of the population followed Christianity, the majority adhered the traditional practices and
