As one may think the system in how high school is ran is efficient, Botstein feels it has outgrown itself. Botstein writes, "young people mature substantially earlier" (154). Botstein believes "young people" are maturing earlier than before. He feels students are equipped to enter the adult life sooner than when high school was first created. Although, Botstein does not address the student's mental, social, and emotional maturity. Todd Gitlin, author and university professor, writes that liberal art educators need to say, "We don't want to add to your information glut, we want to offer some ground from which to perceive the rest of what you will see" (157). Gitlin believes liberal art teachers need to prepare students to be able to adapt to enter the world and learn how hey are "not that different from the common run of humanity" (157). This will prepare students for a career after high school with age 18 still he graduation age. He believes that high school anticipate what is to come which shows that graduating at 18 is still effective.
