For this project, the first thing that my group and I did was research what needed to be known, such as: running techniques, diet plans, recommended stretches, appropriate running attire, and how velocity and acceleration help the runner in seeing how they can improve. After we gathered all of our research, we documented it and filed it until it was needed. The next step was the running. Materials needed for this portion are a stopwatch, a meter stick, calculator, and appropriate running gear.…

It was record time speed for a woman. It was interesting the when she was being awarded she looked like she hadn’t even ran a foot. Her hair was perfect, she was barely sweaty whatsoever. So apparently Rosie Ruiz finished the Boston Marathon in almost record time without sweating. It seemed strange to everyone that you had just ran over 26 miles and you were barely breaking a sweat.…

Twenty meter sprints are an applicable fitness test for the chosen fitness components because it is able to determine acceleration, maximum running speed and speed endurance. However these aspects vary depending of the distance tested over. Vertical jumps tests are effective when testing the strength of the leg muscles as you are required to jump as high as you can from the push from your legs. In order to reach the fitness goals and improve and maximise test results, at least four to five training sessions need to be implemented to achieve noticeable results. However there are only four periods of sport science per week, creating a limitation to the results…

While the 541,000 marathon finishers within the US all come from different backgrounds and have distinct differences, they are frighteningly similar in many aspects of their lives. Take for instance the level of training and determination each marathon runner has. Six out of the seven days every week for at least a couple months, they spend their days in the gym and out on the trails. One must build a body of muscle in order to complete the lengthy race – as is demonstrated by the father-son duo of Ken and Will Satre. Don’t let Ken Satre’s age or small stature fool you; he is a machine.…

Dedication is the one word that I can use to describe Jim Polite, my cross country and track and field coach my four years of high school. As I ran back to my car on Tuesday, while the rain was falling so hard that cars had to stop and pull-over to the side of the rode, I noticed one thing and that was that Polite was standing in the hard rain, still watching and making sure his athletes are performing well. This moment made me realizes that an interview was not going to satisfy what I needed to know about this man. So for the next few hours or so I stood by and observed what he was doing, saying, and how he was interacting with his athletes and coaches. Running was already something that was difficult for all the athletes, whether or not they were good or bad, and it wasn’t something that was easy to get into because it required a great amount of tolerance for pain.…

One year ago today, the first ever Greeley Cross Country Championships was hosted, a 5k race at Josephine Jones Park between the five high schools in Greeley, Colorado- Frontier Academy, Greeley West, University Schools, Northridge, and Greeley Central. Last year Frontier placed first at the meet in the boys race. However, since then their top runners graduated and the Central boys became a real threat to many teams. Although today was mainly a way for Central to come out on top, I wanted redemption from the poor performance I gave at that race. Last year.…

As a year-round student-athlete, balancing classwork and academics with training has been at the forefront of my entire high school career—freshman to senior year. Though the classes I undertook were rigorous and required an extreme level of commitment and attention, I persisted with my athletic career because it taught me several valuable life lessons. The sport I feel that I am most involved in is Cross Country. While only a fall sport, it is, in my opinion, one of the most physically demanding and difficult sports to compete in. We train by running upwards of thirty miles a week to compete against other teams in 5000-meter races on various terrains.…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

Running is hard, it takes an immense amount of strength to cross any finish line. Quite like a road race, there will always be a mad dash from the starting line. Just because two runners sprint out to the front doesn’t mean you should run up there with them. There are many runners who are new to pacing themselves and they will go out and continue hard, only to crash and burn a mile later. You need be smart about you race.…

Hypothesis: Even though the 1.5 mile run test will not produce the highest average VO2 max, the results of the 1.5 mile run test will produce the most accurate VO2 max results as the test puts the most physiological demand on the body compared to the Queens College/McArdle Step Test and the Rockport One Mile Walk Test. Discussion: The Queens College/McArdle Step Test, the Rockport One Mile Walk Test, and the 1.5 Mile Run Test are three different field tests that were performed in this lab that were used to measure and predict an individual’s aerobic capacity. Benjamin Franklin shared a wise piece of information many years ago when he said, “Think of these things: whence you came, where you are going, and to whom you must account.” Although these words with published in Poor Richard’s Almanac nearly three hundred years ago, they can still resonate with the reader just as much as in 1732. In one sentence, Franklin teaches a great life lesson that is still applicable today. Never forgetting where one came from, keeping an eye on their destination, and considering who they answer to is a crucial part of leading a life of integrity.…
