While it may seem almost outrageous to aim to be picked for a future administration’s presidential cabinet, this is my goal – and I believe that the Josef Korbel School will grant me the knowledge base necessary to arrive at and succeed in such a position. Knowing that this goal would be long-term, my current career goal lies in the State Department, ideally as a Foreign Service Officer. The complicated duality of maintaining peace while implementing the foreign policy of the United States with a distinct focus on security of our nation and our allies is what drives me the most, focusing largely on the peace aspect of the job. I feel that American foreign policy is best implemented by means of peace, and as this term is a core component of being a Foreign Service Officer, I feel that this would be an ideal career for me to pursue. Furthermore, I am extremely passionate about politics in the sense of supporting the administration that pushes policy, while staying out of the political complications that come along with partisanship, a desire which a degree in international security is inevitably going to support. A sense of duty has always been a driving force behind my actions – I do not want to be the person that lets down a group, and this translates directly to my educational, short-term, and long-term career goals. I have and continue to put exceptional effort into any and every goal I have, and I know that this drive will allow me to reach any goals that I set. My short tenure as an intern in the Colorado State Capitol during the 2016 session buttressed my desire and duty to serve as I quickly realized the importance of my work, whether it was interpreting a representative’s bill for use by my representative in committee or responding a constituent’s specific questions – each of which could have serious consequences should I make a mistake. While direct politics are not my goal at this time, being able to perform apolitical duties within a political framework extraordinarily important for me to master the goals I am aiming for.
