Bornean Orangutans: Environmental Analysis

Decent Essays
For my project, I chose to design and create a zoo enclosure for a “family” of Bornean Orangutans otherwise known by their scientific name; Pongo pygmaeus. For the construction of this enclosure, I used a box, which I spray painted and cut the top off. This allowed me to mimic a designated viewing area where the Orangutans would hypothetically be placed. Using cardboard walls was not my first choice but I wanted to show specific boundaries of the enclosure. Orangutans are an arboreal species, because of this I used ropes, platforms, and tree-like structures to create an environment that would be conducive to arboreal locomotion and a forest type environment. For the ground covering, I used a soft moss type material keeping in mind males do

These structures were made with PVC pipe and hard mesh. The PVC pipe was cut so it would be one meter tall and have a total of six arms branching off that are half a meter in length. Three arms on top and three arms on bottom. Holes were drilled into the ends of all of the arms to allow a plate to be attached. From those three arms a plate with squares was zip tied securely to each pipe so the organisms could attach themselves to it.…

As of December 2012, 138 reported cases of captive orca attacks upon trainers and visiting pedestrians at SeaWorld and other marine mammal parks have been recorded, three of which resulted in death. The number of reported cases of orca attacks upon humans in the wild is zero (Orca Home). PETA, SeaWorld of Hurt, the Orca Project, and various other organizations contend that SeaWorld 's detainment of orcas for the purposes of entertainment is abusive and violates multiple animal rights. The Orca Project has found captivity of these whales leads to whale to whale aggression, social strife, boredom, and various health issues that lead to their premature deaths (The Orca Project). However, SeaWorld maintains that captivity of these whales is not harmful to the…

Komunyakaa emphasizes these points in the lines, “We hugged bamboo & leaned / against a breeze off the river.” The soldiers had truly merged with a part of the environment as they mimicked the actions of the fauna.…

After watching them only for an hour, I have grown a love for them! I originally went to do my project on the gorillas, but they were so boring and my attention kept gravitating toward the orangutans. They impressed me so much with how gentle they were with one another and also how intelligent they are using cognitive abilities to do people like things. In my research, I read that they sometimes use resources they find in the wild as tools. This was consistent with what I observed when one of the subjects took a branch full of leaves off one of the trees.…

Animal captivity is not a particularly new issue in modern American society. In American culture, most people do not view animals captivity is an immoral issue because they grew up watching animals being caged. The creation of zoos and oceanariums rationalize animal captivity since they produce entertainment for the society and it is being argued that they are made for conservation and education purposes. However, it raises concern in society when the issue involves the threat to human. In 2010, a top female SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau was killed by one of the oldest captive male orca named Tilikum at SeaWorld during a performance.…

Los Angeles Zoo Primates Our day at the zoo simply started with the objective of completing our visit, by seeing at least one each of the primates of each category around the zoo. That was quickly discarded considering that amount of information that the zoo provided for us about each individual creature. Because of the way that the zoo was structured we were unable to simply follow a particular order in which the animals were categorized. We visited all the different primates (as much as we could possibly see in our time there) and simply observed them each and photograph their actions behaviors and appearance along with potential eats and actives that may undergo on a daily base. Organizing the visits based on categories made it easier to structure and understand why it is that each type of primate belongs to that group.…

    Zoochosis In Zoo Animals

Stepping inside a zoo is like setting foot in the wild; with the only difference that the animals are enclosed behind bars and some are within a distance for public safety. Zoo animals, who are held in captivity, are restrained from having the freedom they were evolved to take advantage from because they are preserved for public education and amusement. What may seem like a friendly establishment for wild animals is in reality a park where animals: are used for “educational” purposes, are deprived from having an adequate environment where they can act like animals, suffer from stereotypical behaviors where their behaviors alternate, and are considered to be money makers rather than animals who are being preserved. When humans enjoy visitations…
