The Genus Bordetella
Bordetella are catalase positive, asaccharolytic, aerobic, gram positive rods, whose optimal growth is at 35° to 37°C.
Disease
1. Species of Bordetella is known to cause respiratory diseases like whooping cough, pneumonia, and sinusitis.
2. There are eight species of Bordetella that cause different diseases including Bordetella parapertussis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Bordetella avium, Bordetella hinzii, Bordetella holmessi, Bordetella trematum, Bordetella pertussis, and Bordetella petri.
a. Bordetella parapertussis causes whooping cough and chronic pneumonia in humans as well as sheep.
b. Bordetella bronchiseptica causes many respiratory diseases in mammals. Some of these diseases include atrophic rhinitis in pigs and kennel cough in dogs.

Bordetella avium affects birds and turkey with coryza which is inflammation of the mucous membrane in the nose.
d. Bordetella hinzii affects birds as well as humans. It can cause commensal and septicemia.
e. Bordetella holmessi possibly affects humans. This species causes respiratory disease as well as septicemia.
f. Bordetella trematum possibly affects humans but what diseases it causes is unknown.
g. Bordetella pertussis mainly affects humans and causes whooping cough.
h. Bordetella petri affects the environment with unknown diseases.
Pathogenesis
The eight species of Bordetella generally cause respiratory tract infections in mammals as well as birds.
