Psychological disorders are very common in the everyday world. These disorders can cause patterns in the personality of individuals and sometimes cause them to act aggressive and hostile. Borderline Personality Disorder is one of such disorders. It can cause huge problems for the friends and family of people that are diagnosed with it. In the movie Mommie Dearest the main character, Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway), has many of the common signs that would point to her possibly having this disorder.…

Shelley Saunders, a 26-year-old Caucasian woman, was admitted to the hospital after slashing her wrists and overdosing on heroin. Although an attractive, brilliant, and successful businesswoman, she has never been able to achieve any meaningful relationships. Most recently, Ms. Saunders met a man named Derek at a bar and had sex with him that night. When next morning approached, she told Derek that she was in love with him. Ms. Saunders would call Derek several times throughout the day, often telling him that she wanted to see him, that he was special, and that she could not imagine life without him. This type of clingy behavior eventually became too much for Derek, so he tried to end it with her. However, Ms. Saunders repeatedly harassed Derek by stalking him, calling him, showing up at his job, and leaving threatening notes, all in attempts to get him back. Yet, when her efforts were futile she decided to go to the extreme. One night, she called Derek to him that if she could not have him then…
Borderline personality disorder, also commonly abbreviated to BPD, is a serious mental disorder notable for both emotional instability as well as instabilities within relationships. BPD usually starts in adolescence or early adulthood ‒although symptoms may begin showing in early childhood‒ (NIMH), and affects between 1.6 and 5.9% of the U.S. population (NAMI). Its smaller numbers, however, may be attributed to the fact that it is only a fairly recent disorder; BPD was first recorded as a diagnosable illness by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition in 1980 (DSM-III). BPD was named after the widespread belief by experts that the disorder was merely an abnormal, or ‘borderline’, version of other mental illnesses; this belief was due to several cases of minor psychotic episodes that had never been attributed to other cases of mental disorders. However, developments in modern psychology have deemed this name to be a misnomer, as BPD is now deemed to be its own illness (NIMH). In recent years, some professionals may refer to BPD as “Emotionally Unstable Disorder”, although there…
Before this book I was not aware what Borderline Personality Disorder even was, so everything was quite a shock to me. I believe Kiera did a fantastic job of describing how she felt in specific and different situations, so it made it clear what Borderline Personality Disorder really consists of. It disgusted me how everyone tried convincing her that she did not have this disorder or how no one really talked about it because of the stigma around it. That is why it impressed me when she kept fighting and admitted to having this disorder.…
There is little information on the development of Borderline Personality Disorder in adolescence due to the widespread belief that this disorder is long-standing and that certain personality traits that could be used to diagnose this disorder are not stable until adulthood. The reluctance to diagnose borderline personality disorder in adolescence may also be because of the criteria used to determine whether someone has this disorder. There are over 100 possible combinations of symptoms that could cause someone to be diagnosed. Many symptoms of Borderline personality disorder can first be spotted in children when entering adolescence. It is important to try to diagnose adolescences…
Although borderline personality disorder is strongly inherited, the interpretation of societal stressors also plays a role in the disorder's prevalence rates. A person's risk for the disorder is increased if they live are a part of a community or culture in which unstable family relationships are common. Impulsive tendencies, poor judgment in lifestyle choices, and other consequences of borderline personality disorder may lead individuals to risky situations. Adults with borderline personality disorder are much more likely to be the victim of violence, including rape and other crimes. Symptoms often worsen quite a bit with the presentation of stress and are reduced through treatment and the relieving of stress. Those who are diagnosed with…
There are many types of personality disorders. Borderline personality disorder is by far the worst in my opinion. Some may disagree and say that it is not the worst, but i will prove to you it is the worst.…
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental illness characterised by unstable interpersonal relationships, self-image and emotions, as well as impulsivity (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). In order to be diagnosed, an individual must fit at least 5 of the 9 criteria detailed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition (DSM-5). I fit most of these criteria. At the end of 2014 I was officially diagnosed, after dealing with crazy, erratic emotions and a constant feeling of emptiness and loneliness throughout my entire adolescence and early adulthood. Although I had previously been diagnosed with several other illnesses, none fit quite as well as borderline personality disorder. The joy I felt after…
One of the specific emotions that has been strongly linked to borderline personality disorder (BPD) is shame. The purpose of this study was to examine whether BPD patients have a stronger reaction to shame after a shame-inducing exercise. The study also included women with major depressive disorder (MDD) and women for the healthy control group (HC). The study asked participants to rate the intensity of various emotions after being read potentially shameful situations. These emotions included shame, anger, anxiety, sadness, joy, annoyance, and boredom. The participants were tested before, immediately after, and three, six, and eight minutes after the story was finished. The paper examines the results of the study and how those results can help…
People who have family members that are diagnosed with borderline personality disorder are five times more likely to develop the same disorder than the general population. Biological factors that may play a role in the symptoms of this disorder include increased emotional liability, such as increased cholinergic energy. Some researchers have proposed that, “parental neglect or loss during childhood, or a deficient attachment between child and parent” play a role in developing this disorder (Lyons & Martin, p. 204). Others studies have shown high levels of physical or sexual abuse among patients with this disorder. There are a number of treatments available for those with borderline personality disorder. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is “a complex and eclectic mix of group and individual sessions dealing with interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, problems solving, acceptance, and goal-setting” (Lyons & Martin, p. 204). This method has been effective in reducing some symptoms of this disorder. First-line pharmacology involving SSRIs and antimanic drugs has also been used as effective…
This disorder is usually diagnosed to individuals, males or females, who are in adolescence or early adulthood, just like Susanna. Sometimes, early symptoms of borderline personality disorder can occur during an individual’s childhood. Susanna showed many symptoms that included extreme reactions, rocky relationships with family and peers, distorted sense of self-image, impulsive behaviors, suicidal thoughts and chronic feelings of complete emptiness (Borderline Personality Disorder,…
Borderline personality disorder is characterized by stereotypical repetitive and maladaptive interpersonal interactions. Considerable controversy exists regarding preferred treatment and prognosis (Gregory, 2004). The moods of borderline patients are erratic, their personal relationships are turbulent, and their self-image is unstable. When serotonin is decreased, certain areas of the brain involved in emotion regulation, impulsivity and aggression causes the brain not to function properly.…
