-Alexander Pope Just think, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind; isn’t that a lovely thought, to have a spotless mind? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite films and it is also the source from which I first heard the aforementioned quote. The film focuses around two characters Joel Barrish and Clementine Kruczynski, but our main focus is Clementine. She’s impulsive and she engages in risky behaviors. She has mood swings. This film shows a human being who is both flawed and beautiful, with a personality disorder; specifically BPD or borderline personality disorder. I, myself, have been diagnosed with BPD and I couldn’t even begin to express the amount of gratitude I feel toward my therapist to be able to name the pain and isolation that comes from this disorder. With borderline personality disorder there is a constant and violent tide of friends and family. You’re the one who pushes them away and you are the one who draws them back to you. Yet there is always a lingering fear that one day the tide will not return, and you will be stranded and alone because you’re bad and unworthy. While they are erasing Joel’s memory Patrick receives a distressed phone call from Clementine and leaves the other technician to take care of the erasing while he goes to comfort Clementine. Here is where we begin to see some identity issues and some separation from reality. He asks her what’s going on and she replies, “I don’t know. I don’t know! I’m lost, I’m scared. I feel like I’m disappearing. My skin’s coming off. I’m getting old! Nothing makes any sense to me! Nothing makes any sense!
