Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

“How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d”
-Alexander Pope Just think, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind; isn’t that a lovely thought, to have a spotless mind? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite films and it is also the source from which I first heard the aforementioned quote. The film focuses around two characters Joel Barrish and Clementine Kruczynski, but our main focus is Clementine. She’s impulsive and she engages in risky behaviors. She has mood swings. She is quick to anger or sarcasm but she feels guilty after. She also has unstable relationships

This film shows a human being who is both flawed and beautiful, with a personality disorder; specifically BPD or borderline personality disorder. I, myself, have been diagnosed with BPD and I couldn’t even begin to express the amount of gratitude I feel toward my therapist to be able to name the pain and isolation that comes from this disorder. With borderline personality disorder there is a constant and violent tide of friends and family. You’re the one who pushes them away and you are the one who draws them back to you. Yet there is always a lingering fear that one day the tide will not return, and you will be stranded and alone because you’re bad and unworthy. This is how I struggle BPD but what exactly is borderline personality …show more content…
While they are erasing Joel’s memory Patrick receives a distressed phone call from Clementine and leaves the other technician to take care of the erasing while he goes to comfort Clementine. Here is where we begin to see some identity issues and some separation from reality. He asks her what’s going on and she replies, “I don’t know. I don’t know! I’m lost, I’m scared. I feel like I’m disappearing. My skin’s coming off. I’m getting old! Nothing makes any sense to me! Nothing makes any sense! Those that have the previously mentioned Borderline Personality are said to have a lot of problems with relationships (Rathus, 2010) Very early on in the movie Joan is said to have had a lot of unstable relationships, having been married and divorced a few times. After this point of the movie she shows this instability with her spouse Gregg. Gregg eventually leaves Joan and Joan ends up talking to another man as evident when Christina walks in on her with her spouse. Later in Joan’s life she ends up with a guy named Alfred Steele (Harry Goz). The two fight over financial problems quite a lot and the relationship ends when Steele dies. Joan overall has a very bad track record when it comes to relationships and they usually do not end well. Joan also changes her mood very quickly, which is a trait that a lot of people with Borderline Personality Disorder have (Rathus, 2010). The first example is when she is at the party she was having for Christina. She acts very friendly towards Christina however she then ends up acting strict and taking away her presents. She also acts really excited after getting the role which she wanted, yet as soon as she sees that Christina was mocking her in Joan’s mirror her mood changes significantly fast. Joan then acts aggressive towards Christina and cuts off her hair, despite being in an extremely excited mood prior. Another mood change she has is when Joan sees the wire hangers in Christina’s room as soon as she sees them instantly acts aggressive towards Christina and starts beating her for little to no reason. Finally, when she was taking Christina home from boarding school, she acts friendly to the lady that was writing about her, but as soon as Christina tells the lady the truth Joan attacks…

I believe Kiera did a fantastic job of describing how she felt in specific and different situations, so it made it clear what Borderline Personality Disorder really consists of. It disgusted me how everyone tried convincing her that she did not have this disorder or how no one really talked about it because of the stigma around it. That is why it impressed me when she kept fighting and admitted to having this disorder.…

A high risk factor for suicide is a traumatic/stressful life event that is humiliating. In Robin’s case, it was her husband leaving her and living with another woman which resulted in the feeling of rejection. Borderline Personality Disorder is defined, by the DSM-IV, as instability of interpersonal relationships, paranoia or dissociative symptoms, and impaired self-image. People with BPD have the tendency to misinterpret life events and see them as more stressful or humiliating than they actually are. As Robin’s case stated, when her friends would disappoint her, she would feel rejected and feel as if it was a personal affront which led to poor self-image of herself and would lead her into a state of “autopilot” of self-harm. With BPD and…

Additionally, another BPD symptom is impulsiveness which is a risky behavior as an emotional reaction to outside events. Clementine uses her impulsiveness as self-defense. Even though it is not directly stated, she makes frantic efforts to avoid abandonment. Her impulsiveness is the cause of why there is trouble in their relationship since Joel is more of a reserved person. At first she “promises to take [Joel] out of the mundane” but pushes him in deeper. In one of Joel's memories, while they were in the woods, Clementine affirms, “You know I'm impulsive.” At the time, Clementine had her red hair meaning they were in good terms with their relationship. Joel's ideal version of Clementine, explains to him that there is no valid reason behind…
