The four disorders I will be comparing are borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder and obsessive personality disorder. All of these disorders and their symptoms heavily affected and influenced Joan and everyone around her. For example, her daughter Christina grew up with a mother that insisted that everything was done her way or no way at all. Crawford desperately wanted to give her two adopted children all her love and affection but wasn’t quite ready to handle every aspect of motherhood. The first disorder she possessed was borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder. Rathus author of Psychology Principles & Practices refers to obsessive compulsive disorder as unwanted thoughts and mental images that occur in repetition in one’s mind (2010). The movie opens as Joan starts getting ready for a day of filming. You instantly notice how anal she becomes about getting every last speck of dirt off herself. Another example is when Joan and her maids were scrubbing her tiles floors clean. Everything looked beautiful and spotless until Joan finds something out of place which happened to be under the potted plant. Joan began scrubbing the infected spot herself while continued to say “Oh I’m not mad at you, I’m mad at the dirt.” These are obvious examples of obsessive compulsive disorder because she keeps imagining all the dirt accumulating everywhere and she can’t help but to make sure it’s all

Faye Dunaway’s portrayal of Joan Crawford in the movie Mommy Dearest (1981) exhibits many of the characteristics of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Her character also seems to suffer from antisocial narcissistic behaviors as well as histrionic personality and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. These disorders often occur together and are closely related mental health diagnoses, which result in a disruption in self-image, relationships and regulation or control of emotions (Life on the borderline, 2014). On the other hand, when a mental illness is depicted in this outlandish way, the struggle of the person dealing with the mental illness is overshadowed by the comedy used to represent the disorder, and the behavior is more accurately related to a comedy act than it is to an actual representation of the disease. When the behaviors of people with mental disorders in film includes this type of nonsense, it is, unfortunately, perceived merely as bizarre behavior that is meant to be laughed…

The Premise Forrest Gump is a movie detailing the life of an Alabama born man with a low I.Q. In a very realistic fashion, the audience follows Forrest as he grows through his life. Although the movie is a simplistic picture of the life of a single man, it also somewhat satirically details many of the events the fictional character would have lived through and provides a life-like picture of many people with psychological disorders in the acquaintances Forrest makes through his adventures.
