Summary of Border Town chapter 1-4
Chapter 1:
The first chapter introduces the protagonists of Border Town: an old man and his granddaughter Cuicui. They live by a narrow stream on the way to the little mountain town called Chadong (Congwen Shen, Border Town). The man makes a living by running a small local ferry, and his orphaned granddaughter is born out of wedlock. The old man brings up Cuicui by himself.
Chapter 2:
Chapter two depicts Chadong, and the lives of local residents on both sides of the white river. The local residents are generous and kind: “they had an eye for their own gain, but also for helping other folks. ”(Congwen Shen, Border Town) Also, this chapter depicts the battalion of garrison troops that defend Chadong. Everybody in Chadong passes each day in a pure quietude that is hard to imagine. But meanwhile, besides its peace and quietude, this small town also has its busy side, as the nexus for commerce with East Sichuan. Shunshun is the man in charge of the docks, and he is respected because he is very generous to friends. Between his two sons, the older Tianbao is seventeen and more like his father, who is bold, unconstrained and confident, while the younger son Nuosong is fifteen and more like his mother, being intelligent and full of passion. At the Dragon Boat Festival, all the residents go down to the riverside to see the dragon boats race and the competition of capturing ducks. Tianbao and Nuosong are the best rowers and swimmers, but Tianbao is on an upcountry journey that day and only Nuosong attends the dragon boats race. Cuicui hears the booming of drums on dragon boats that skimmed over the water and crossed the hills to the ferry boat and the sound reminds her of her past
