The United States is one of the biggest exports and import countries in the world, trading with countries on every continent. The United States promotes and open market concepts, because an open market promotes new businesses, which creates jobs, and help grow the economy, but at the same time the U.S wants to keep its borders closed. Two of the major reasons for keeping the borders closed are to prevent the flow of illegal drugs, and illegal migration into the United States.
The United States government has a number of different law enforcement agencies patrolling both the northern and southern border to prevent the flow of illegal drugs, and illegal migration. This closed border concept is very important because of the damage that the drug trade, and illegal immigration can cause to a country. Drugs like cocaine, and marijuana are illegal, and when they are smuggled into the country, the citizens abused them causing social issues. Illegal immigration also causes social issues, as it is illegal to hire undocumented workers in the Untied States. When these migrants get to the U.S and cannot work, they may turn to crime as a way of surviving. The trend of open market and closed borders “ is most striking along the 1,951-mile U.S.-Mexican border, where the United States is moving both to open the border to the legal flow of goods and to close the border to the illegal flow of drugs and migrant labor”( Andreas, 1996, p.53).
