Boots, Bullets, and Bad Blood
Citizens cower and scream in terror as a torrent of bullets and shrapnel violently rip through human flesh and tissue, leaving gaping holes that pour blood while exposing decimated insides. The simple shacks and array of other objects lining the narrow street provide little protection for the innocent civilians. Then, to make the circumstances even worse, a rebel group of insurgents, armed outlaws in resistance to the government and other authority, begin to harass and belligerently tease the armed and highly trained soldiers fanned out on the opposing end of the street. However, this violent exchange cannot be labeled as a firefight,

World War I was a conflict that claimed the lives of millions of soldiers and altered the lives of countless others. Shortly after the War, two novels surfaced, Generals Die In Bed by Charles Yale Harrison and All Quiet On The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, that became influential in our understanding of how the soldiers lived. Each novel provides a firsthand account from a soldier’s point of view on one of the most brutal wars ever to have been fought. The novels portray war without the common popular veils of patriotism and heroism. General Douglas MacArthur stated “The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war”.…

There is no contesting that there is major debate surrounding warfare of any kind, whether in terms of man-to-man combat warfare on battle grounds, modern warfare with the use of more advanced technology such as UAVs and drones or the more contemporary cyber warfare. Debates concerning the legality, morality and cost-benefit analysis of these kinds of warfare has filled the rhetoric of policy analysts, scholarly academics and national leaders on international frontiers. With the Middle-East and North Africa (MENA) regions currently highlighted as hotspots for the ‘war on terror’, it is pertinent to analyze and understand the implications of the various kinds of force being used against the terrorist groups and the innocent civil populations…

All Quiet on the Western Front focuses on a generation of bright young men, who for a while survived the war physically, but were destroyed psychologically due to the extreme conditions they were forced to live in. Although soldiers and war are portrayed as glorious and heroic by many different sources in those times, war was infact a vicious and horrific time where innocent lives are lost and destroyed. A whole generation lost their lives without anyone stopping to mourn or remember them, but they were only replaced with even younger untrained boys. Everything that they were and accomplished or hope to accomplish in life was lost in an instant. Their futures were brutally stolen from them in the name of protecting their homeland, but as these…

In response to these attacks, the United States has deployed over two million troops amongst all five of its military branches combined. In 2014 the US withdrew a majority of its troops from the combat zones in the middle east, however the war still wages on. War correspondents have one of the most dangerous jobs on earth. When controversy breaks out across the globe, it’s war correspondents who muster up the courage to go directly to the fighting and report the warfare; more specifically, they go to the heart of the controversial issue. This is where a war correspondent is most likely to get the declared truth for either side participating in the war. The core of the issue is the most dangerous place for anyone to be – especially, a non-fighting war correspondent who is experienced in journalism, and not warfare. One might ask, why would anyone travel to the heart of a fight just to report what is happening?…

Minimalism, in essence, is describing the most, in the least words possible. The art of literary minimalism seeded around 1960s and 1970s, a result of the then ongoing meta-fiction trend. There are some beliefs that minimalism in prose was actually initiated by the 1940s crime-fiction writers like James M. Cain, the writings of whom were imbued with the least of words and yet put forth a description of many. However, literary minimalism was brought to center-stage (this is the general agreement by most, if not all) through the guiding hands of authors such as Ernest Hemingway (his collection of short-stories and works earlier than the 70s), Raymond Carver, Ann Beattie and many more around the 1970s. Almost the entirety of the concept of literary…
