Personal Narrative: My Experience At Boot Camp

Great Essays
Picture senior year of high school – all the graduating students are beginning to discuss where they plan on going the following year, and what exactly they want to do. Just like all the others, I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, too. My family and I thought it through exhaustively, or so I thought. I visited several different campuses in a few different states. I had studied the extent of many different majors, I considered many backup options, and I questioned what I thought I would enjoy, love or hate. In May of 2013 I felt like I knew all the answers – that being Massachusetts Maritime Academy. I would enjoy life at sea, I could make a matchless salary, and all while visiting different ports around the world. I got the acceptance …show more content…
For visualization of these long weeks: there was endless yelling and screaming from the squad leaders and regimental officers at all hours. We were woken up around 0400 and we began running by 0430. The day usually consisted of many educational ship practices, endless marching in the summer heat, and peanut butter sandwiches. It was awful. To most people’s surprise, the Boot Camp experience was honestly the most enjoyable part for me, as awful as it …show more content…
I realized quickly that I couldn’t avoid the constant critical thinking. I know in the state of Massachusetts one must be 21 years of age or older to even consider the police academy. I knew I had time to use, but how so? I debated; do I go back to college? Associates Degree? Bachelor’s Degree? Do I live there? Should I commute? There were so many questions I felt like I could not answer. In the moment, I knew I did not like living at college in the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. The thought of another new campus made me cringe, and the idea of a bachelor’s degree had me sweating. Thus,

I didn't realize that playing and teaching these young adolescent minds would soon be the major I would be studying. I’ve chosen lots of areas to study throughout high school, but I’ve always kept changing my mind. For example, I’ve gone from wanting to be a marine biologist all the way from wanting to be an entrepreneur. I never could figure out what my heart…

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

My time at Valley Forge was over, I had been fighting for general George Washington since the summer of 1775 and the victory on April 13 looked so far away because it was only late December, and it was seeming as if a turning point was unlikely. Do I stay and be loyal to my brothers or do I leave and never look back. I had to make my choice very soon, I could have left and the pain of seeing my brothers die , or I could stay and fight for my freedom such as many men had already done. The decision I made was to stay and fight for my country because many men had gotten sick, and I was a faithful servant to my country and I wanted to do what I came to the new world to do which was achieved my freedom .…

The last few days of my life have been something new to me. I truly know now what I’ve been taking for granted. The war isn’t the great adventure it seemed to be at first. In the past battle at Vimy, I’ve witnessed the death of thousands of young men just like me. During the nights of the battle, the constant deafening noises of the enemy shells, bombs, and explosives made gave me nightmares.…

When I began working for the Veteran’s Administration as a personal care attendant for veterans that are wheelchair bound I had no idea how profoundly one veteran would affect me. This veteran, whom I will refer to as D-man, would become part of my life for 3 years. This is the first experience that I would have with a totally dependent quadriplegic. Even though I have worked as a medical assistant for many years, this was the first time that I would get to experience up close and personal, the day-in and day-out challenges facing paraplegics and quadriplegics, not only for D-man but also his mother who is his full-time caregiver.…

I am an American. I say it with the utmost pride and respect. Some citizens don’t stand when they hear, “The National Anthem” play, they don’t remove their hats, and sometimes they even talk over our song. They don’t feel great pride when they see The United States of America’s flag waving high in the air. Some Americans tend to think of being free, having personal rights, being allowed to speak up and many other rights as normal, but in other countries living in America and having the opportunities we have everyday is only a dream to them.…

Although many people see this as a positive thing, the authors argue that college is not for everyone. Murray discloses that some of those that enter college to get a degree end up dropping out. He attributes this to the fact that “it remains taboo to acknowledge that college is intellectually too demanding for many young people” (251). Murray believes that young people would benefit more if guidance counselors pushed them toward something they were naturally good at as they would enjoy it far more and would excel. Similarly, Owen and Sawhill believe that “a bachelor’s degree is not a smart investment for every student in every circumstance” (222).…

Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. At first I thought that it was like any normal 3- day camping trip, which made me extremely excited since I enjoy camping very much. Once I got there, I realized that it was a different type of camp. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing. The reason I’m writing this is because I learned so much about being open minded, accepting, and kind to other people and new experiences.…
