Books with Ice Cream is expected to serve three hundred students at a total cost of $82,000. This value is derived from similar bookmobile programs such MCNPL’s Words on Wheels program. Based on the description of the bookmobile program, Books with Ice Cream should cost less. Unlike a traditional bookmobile program, students do not enter the bookmobile which decreases the space needed inside. The extra space will allow us to purchase a smaller vehicle at a lower price. In the end, we should see that Books with Ice Cream will cost about $270 per student. I expect that children served by this program will not lose their reading skills over the summer. Research by McGill-Franzen & Allington has shown that students who read at

Fixing the issue of summer learning loss is a small, but key, issue. Once we overcome this issue, we must tackle the other parts of the chain: preschool, college enrollment and college graduation. We can use the three concepts found in the problem section to discover the solution. Any initiative must keep the cost low, follow the partnerships prefer but not required axiom and be proven effective. This would allow a policy maker create a program that can be implemented in our current political …show more content…
In the case of preschool, we can create variations of all our three initiatives. Tablets can be lend to mothers with educational games so that the child can start learning the alphabet and the numbers. The tablet can also be equipped with audio books that will ensure they hear plenty of high level words. Text messages can also be sent to the mother with tasks to improve their child’s academics. All these initiatives will be low cost, follow the partnerships prefer but not required axiom and, hopefully, be proven effective. In the case of increasing college enrollment, I will rely on the model employed by Study Orange. Study Orange uses texting to guide students step by step through the college application process. The students in the program have been accepted at countless schools including John Hopkins, USC and Pomona. The program has the benefit of being cost effective (approximately $30 per student), self reliant and effective. In order to increase the college graduation rate, we can once again rely on the programs we have used so far. A text messaging program is particularly relevant since many students miss important deadlines. Text messages can help communicate with the student to ensure they stay on track. As mentioned previously, text messages are an inexpensive method that can be quite

The Benefits of Year Round School The idea of year-round school is foreign to most people and they become uneasy when the subject is mentioned. A modified year-round schedule means having longer breaks throughout the year and a shortened summer break. For instance, school would start in July and end in May. That is ten months of learning and two months of summer break.…

On average, people forget 40 percent of what they have learned within the time span of 20 minutes. Throughout the course of just six days the average person would recall just 23 percent of what they have learned. Concluding that if a teacher were to give a 20 minute lecture on the civil war, and then he was to give a test on it, most students would score no higher than a mere 65 percent, even though the information was given to them recently. So then if students cannot even recall a quarter of learnt material within six days, then what would happen if the material had not been refreshed or reviewed within 60 days.…

Not everyone who attends college are successful at completing the courses needed to graduate. For many reasons, college students are forced to drop out willingly, are withdrawn by administration, or simply lose interest in furthering their education. However, the college students who complete college successfully and make it to graduation share some habits that make the odds of being successful work in their favor. Many college students succeed because they make it a priority to attend and involve themselves in class sessions regularly, take control of their education, and nurture relationships with the instructors on their school campus. One of the most important causes of being a successful college student is actually attending class sessions regularly.…

If every student begins to buy new textbooks, there will be a surplus of used textbooks. Publishers will definitely have a large profit, but the number of wasted textbooks will be large also. Several used textbooks are in almost brand new condition, and if students could pay cheaper to get the same product, they probably will not buy the more expensive product. The Committee’s plan for making textbooks cheaper, while students usually follow it, does not work. “The fatal flaw in that proposal (and similar ones made by many state legislatures) is used books are the cause, not the cure for, high textbook prices,” which shows how the committee’s proposal is the cause for high textbook prices (Granof 206).…

Despite all the dreaming and wishing we must all face the inevitable truth that our world is constantly changing and we must all adjust. Mark Twain once said, “I never let schooling interfere with my education.” School is not the only place that learning takes place. Therefore school is not the only place a kid should spend their adolescence. There has always been a big debate on whether or not the school year should be longer. The school year should not be longer because kids need time outside of school, it would cost too much to keep them in school for a longer amount of time, and children should not be denied the opportunities that occur when school isn't in session.…
