Booker T. Washington believed in trade education, rational occupations for blacks and dismissed any actions for equality. He wanted the two races to become friends and for blacks to be satisfied with their lifestyles. W.E.B Dubois believed in a liberal arts education, so blacks would have a well-rounded education. Dubois was a gradualist which meant he believed the African American race could do extraordinary things if they were educated.
