Book Thief: I Am Haunted By Humans

Decent Essays
The last sentence of the book thief is “I am haunted by humans.” I think this sentence completely sums up the overall meaning of the book. The things humans do to one another is horrifying. We are willing to kill each other without blinking an eye. At the same time, humans can be incredibly compassionate and brave. Death is haunted by humans, by the good and the bad. Humanity is can be unbelievably hard to understand. Majority of the time humans can’t understand it themselves. The complexity of humanity astounds and confuses Death. At the end of the day, you shouldn’t fear Death. After all, people are the real monsters.

Death is believed to be an everlasting rest and is the next step afterlife is complete. There are multiple ways people look at death: Some believe it’s a reincarnation and some who say it’s an afterlife. I believe that Death is both feared and enticing. In the film, A Matter of Life and Death, every character seemed fearful towards death. It was fearful when Peter could not say his last goodbye to his family in person when he knew death was coming for him as well as June who was worried about Peter dying when he was undergoing brain surgery or even his life when he radioed her in order to ask her to send his love to his sister and family.…

It is Death that connects all humans together, and Death who carries the souls onto the conveyor belt to the afterlife. His non-stop work for humans is demanding and taxing on his sanity.
