Book Thief: A Thematic Analysis

The structure of this novel is different than the ones we read before. It includes few small stories and to be honest, it is hard to follow along. The writer does not follow the basic storytelling. This novel has several themes but I am going to focus the majority of this paper on poverty and absence of the father in the book. Poverty is the first thing that comes to head from this novel. When the brothers have to move into their uncle over summer because their mother does not have the time to take care of them. The absence of father made their mother to work all day long. The father absence can be seen from the start. In my view, the older son Rafa never had the right discipline and that's because of lack of fatherhood. This can be seen in chapter one when he hits Ysrael in the head with a bottle. What person in their right mind does that especially a 12-year-old kid? …show more content…
Beating the kids when they do wrong. That shows why the older sun Rafa is so aggressive. Rafa has an aggressive personality and this is a result of wrong parenting. Thier mother, on the other hand, is more nurturing and has a completely different approach to raise her kids. She defends her kids no matter what.This family is really traditional. Father makes the calls and he doesn't listen to anyone. People in the third world countries take more traditional approach when it gets to parenting. In this family, they use the stick and the reward method. If you do wrong father will deal with you and in the contrast mother tries to help you at all time. Father is usually fair and both kids know that as long as they do nothing wrong they are good. It is interesting that their father has a scary figure and we can say kids are scared of him at some point but at the same time kids really like him and respect him. maybe they respect him because they are scared of
