Book Summary: The Preacher By Elijah Farmer

Improved Essays
My book starts by introducing multiple important characters. The first character I will tell you about is Elijah Freeman. Elijah is the main protagonist of the story. He is is 11 years old and is the first child in Buxton to be born free. The story is written in 1st person and it is told from his perspective. Elijah is best friends with Cooter Bixby. Elijah is best known for being skilled at “chucking stones” and throwing up on Frederick Douglas’ suit as a child . Elijah is also shown to be very gullible throughout the book (Usually being tricked by the “Preacher”), although often proved that he is very smart his childlike thinking makes the most ridiculous things make sense. Next is the Right Reverend Deacon Doctor Zephariah Connerly …show more content…
The Preacher is a skilled trickster later revealed to be the main antagonist. Early in the book the Preacher tells Elijah and Cooter that there are such things as hoop snakes. Which he describes as creatures that bite their tails before they attack and chase them in the motion of a barrel and once it has it’s sights on you it will bite you and your body will slowly deteriorate until you explode. He also tells many other lies that lead Elijah down the wrong path and eventually tells him to not listen to his parents and to think for himself. Last but not least is Mr.Leroy. Mr.Leroy is a handyman who often works for Mrs.Holton to save money to buy his family out of captivity in the states. Mr. Leroy’s wife and daughter were separated as slaves and when he finally made it to Buxton they were still stuck with their “owners.” This story takes place in Buxton, Canada. Around the time slavery was still legal in …show more content…
But at the same time Elijah meets Mrs.Chloe. Mrs. Chloe is a slave is is unclothed and in chains holding her baby while her owner is asleep. After a bit of talking, Mrs. Chloe asks Elijah to leave so he wouldn’t get caught. The next morning after Elijah “left” he supposedly comes back and tricks Mrs. Chloe into giving his mother her child so that it wouldn’t have grow up under ownership like an object. At the end of the book Elijah is riding home on Jingle Boy giving Hope (the baby’s name the speech that his dad gives to new free runaway slaves. I honestly did not enjoy this book at all. It was filled with southern slang so you had to go back and repeating the sentences just to understand them. I hate historical fiction. I thought it was boring. The plotline was everywhere. Some of the characters were a lot alike. I really don’t recommend this book to anyone. If you are interested in historical fiction based on slavery than go ahead and knock yourself

Phase one: Before you read Before i actually get in to my reflection about the book i would like to tell you that the book i first told you is not the book i am doing right now. There were many reason i wasn't able to do that one, first of all i couldn't find the book anywhere i ask all the libraries and they all said that book is checked out in their systems, second reason was that the book was extremely long and i wouldn't be able to finish it, third reason was that the book is extremely boring i looked up a book summary online for it and i got so bored i almost fell asleep reading the summary. So now the book i have is The Bean Tree, now don't get me wrong i'm not saying that this book is NOT boring but its better than my first book. And last thing, i forgot to ask you if this book is okay to read, but i asked the libraries if either the setting is in Tucson or Arizona or the author live in Arizona or Tucson and they said yes sorry ahead of time.…

I am going to start by saying i thoroughly enjoyed this book and think especially right now it is so relevant with some of the issues we are facing right now in media with the police shootings and things going on with our president. Everyone needs to read this book. This book starts off with a young boy named Douglas born in Talbot County, Maryland. Fredrick Like most people who write books about their own lives goes on with basic things like talking about age in that current part of the book, family, birthdays, early memories and things like that that which normally are introductions to a person. Well the first basic thing like him talking about his age is where u start seeing the dehumanizing effects of slavery in this book, also the first…

In my opinion, the book was fair. Though it has an exciting climax and detailed events, the ending was confusing because the book ended in the second year of world war two. I really wanted to know what is going to happen to Sophie and her family because if you know very little about world war two you would want to know when did the Allies free France. In other books, authors tell you about the whole years of world war two with important details. In this book, I think there are some parts that the author could have gotten rid of like the part she is talking about a Scottish soldier “I noticed his dark brown hair, pale freckly face and bright blue eyes.…

I just finished reading Diary of a Snoopy Cat it was an interesting book all in all I give it a 3 out of 4. I gave it a 3 because there are parts of the book that can be slightly confusing and had part mentioned that could have been left out, they weren't really needed. I feel the introduction in the beginning of the book could have been setup better than it was. The characters are very intriguing from their names to their different personalities.…

"The Maltese Falcon by Hammett is an hard boiled great novel. I personally enjoyed reading this classic book, probably because I like very much private detective story, and the fact that the author worked ad a detective himself maybe It gives the book a little bit of reliability, also I already watched a film inspired by the book, the one with Bogart, and I loved It very much. The plot is very complex and the great quantity of characters sometimes made the book very hard to comprehend but at the end all the pieces of the puzzle are revealed. The only thing I found a little bit annoying are the events of the second half of the book.…

Lies Personal Response I enjoyed the action and the suspense throughout the book. This book was a lot more bloody and violent than the last one. The more I read Esi Edugyan’s award winning novel Half-Blood Blues, the more frustrated I get with it. Edugyan’s writing style may very well be the definition of style over content in literary form. This issue is mostly generated from the novel’s nonlinear form and the intense over use of unwarranted descriptions. My first major issue with the novel is its purposeless nonlinearity. It really doesn’t have that Pulp Fictionesque style that allows each timeline to flow naturally into the next, causing the writing to feel very choppy.…

In my perspective, I found the book Mind Wide Open to be very useful. It was a great book to read, it had numerous of strengths. The main strength of the book was Johnson’s writing style. It was simple and it can be understandable by anyone who lacks the fundamental background to understand brain science books, in which leads the reader to increase his/her awareness about how the brain work in action. His language made me feel like I was sitting next to a close friend and having a warm conversation with him/her.…

In this novel, “Native Son,” I have examined and established my thoughts about the protagonist Bigger, who has a pessimistic view of the world. In the beginning of the novel, he is presented as an uneducated young man and denies getting a job from his mother’s request. Having been a manipulator throughout all his life, Bigger’s fear of confronting external forces overwhelms him, and therefore is unable to accept his fear. However, his biggest concern is the attitude towards whites. Racism is a major factor that plays a significant role in the novel, which helps to make Bigger understand the circumstances of racial crimes and how they create an influence towards him.…

I came across this book in one of my classes in my first semester of college. When the professor first introduced it to the class, stating that we would be reading it throughout the semester and completing assignments about it as we go I was not very excited about it. Personally, I am not a big reader, but I knew I had to read this book and pay very close attention to it since I would have to complete assignments about it. The professor plan was we would read 2-3 chapters every week and try to stay at the same pace as a class. Well, that did not happen.…
