The book begins with 14 year old Ponyboy Curtis who is a Greaser, (a hoodlum) walking home alone after watching a movie. He is stopped by a gang of Socs, (a greaser’s worst enemy) who begin to mug Ponyboy and threaten to kill him. The Socs badly injure Ponyboy, however, his two brothers Darry and Sodapop arrive and chase off the Socs with the rest of their gang.
The next night Pony, Dally and Johnny head out to a drive-in movie. There they meet two girls: Cherry and Marcia who are girlfriends of Socs. Dally soon leaves after giving the girls a hard time, but the boys are then joined by another Greaser, Two-Bit. Ponyboy is shoved into the fountain and his head is immersed in water. Intensity of the situation rises and in the heat of the moment Johnny pulls out his blade and kills the Soc. The others flee. Ponyboy and Johnny run out of town and hide in an abandoned church where Dally hands them a gun and $50.
A week later, Dally tells the boys that the charges have changed from murder to manslaughter in the act of self-defence. Johnny is now believes that he has a chance and wants to come back home. As they are heading towards the car, the boys notice that the church is on fire and two children from an excursion are trapped inside. Johnny and Ponyboy don’t hesitate to jump in to rescue the boys. They manage to save the children and Ponyboy escapes unscathed, whereas Johnny is hit by a log of timber and breaks his back. Johnny falls into a coma.
The two boys now hailed as heroes are taken back to town. This is where Pony is reunited with his
