Jonas In The Giver

In the next seven chapters, we observed some significant changes in the main character, Jonas. As he is promoted to a higher age group, the Twelve, he receives a completely different task related to his future career in the December Ceremony. In the Ceremony of Twelve, he is embarrased as his number is skipped, however, it turns out to be special as he receives the job as the Receiver of Memory. Unlike his friends who are assigned for the job, the term “selected” is used for Jonas’s career, which is considered very rare and special to the community. Much as honours he receives, Jonas also has to work independently and has to overcome pains during his training. After his training begins, Jonas is given the opportunity to widen his mind about the wonderful feeling of snow and sunshine, the color of red, extreme suffer of sunburnt and the things like sled or hills which used to be common to people from the past but no longer exist in his community. His work is to keep the memories of the community, even the whole world for many years. Before Jonas, he has trained another girl whose name is not supposed to be said in the community and whose training was believed to be a failure. However, he is now using his last ability to train Jonas into the next Receiver, replacing his place. There is a similarity between Jonas and the Giver, which is their pale eyes. This suggests the destiny of Jonas to become the Receiver, which also shows their abilities to see beyond, unlike the rest of the community. We also notice that the slowly developing baby, Gabriel, who is given another year to grow yet not be released, has the same eyes. The fact that Gabriel shares this quality with the Receiver somewhat reveals his gifted power like
