Trying to achieve your personal legend can become much more to a fulfilling life. Your personal legend is something you always wanted to accomplish in life. The Alchemist written by Paulo Coelho is about a young shepherd named Santiago, who seeks hidden treasure at the foot of the pyramids. It all started with an reoccurring dream of him finding the treasure. As he travels, meet new people, and learns new lessons on life. On his travels he meets a crystal merchant, who tells him his personal legend and how he uses it as a reminder for what he’s living for. Both of them have a personal legend, but not trying to accomplish it won’t lead to a fulfilling life. Growing up Santiago always wanted to travel the world. The merchant dreamed of traveling to get to Mecca, but he too afraid to fulfill it. The merchant doesn’t like the thought of change and he’d rather have everything stay as the same. He tells Santiago he wants to pursue his personal legend, but never does, even though he has the money and the time. The problem is that he doesn’t want his life to get any better and now he stuck unhappy never going to Mecca. On page 55, Santiago asks why the merchant doesn’t to want travel. He says, “ because it’s the thought of Mecca that keeps me alive. That’s what helps me face the days that are all the same, these mute crystals on the shelves, and lunch and dinner at that same horrible cafe. I’m afraid that if my dream is realized, I’ll have no reason to go on living.” This shows that he is able to live his life without achieving his personal legend, but he’s not living a fulfilling
