Soldier dog is a book about a boy named Stanley who runs away from to join the army and is given a Great Dane named Bones to train for the war. This book takes place in WW1, and is accurate about what actually happened during the war.The book starts when Stanley is at home and their dog Rocket is missing. when Stanley’s dad finds her, she has mated with a farm dog. Stanley’s dad is very unhappy about this because he says, “ nobody wants a stupid half breed, only purebred will do.” Stanley’s dad is also very depressed because Stanley’s mother has died, and Stanley’s older brother Tom was sent off to the war to fight. After Stanley’s dad finds out about Rocket and that she’s going to have puppies, he treatens to kill them when they’re born.

His dad tells Stanley that they’re going to sell them, and forces Stanley to let them go. The person they were selling them to, says that he will take the three girls, but not the male. So Stanley gets to kepp him and names him Soldier. Stanley’s dad is very unhappy about this and threatens to drown Soldier. So one morning Stanley wakes up and notices that soldier is gone. realizing whats happened, he runs out of the house and to the lake. where he finds a cage in the water that Stanley’s dad had tied a rope to and thrown in the lake.Realizeing his dad has drowned Soldier, Stanley runs away saying, “ I will never forgive him for what he’s done”. He enrolls in the army and sighns up for the messenger dog program.This is accurate because they did use lots of dogs in the war to send messages to eachother. So Stanley Recieves a dog named Bones to train. The pair excells together and are soon stationed in France. One reason Stanley sighned up for the army was to see if he could find his brother Tom. He recieves a letter from his teacher Ms. Bird saying that Tom will be home in one week, and she will have to tell Tom what has happened and where Stanley is.
