In the book, there are two kids named Joey who is nine and his little sister Mary Alice who is seven. Joey and his sister Mary Alice visit their Grandma Dowdel, they go an visit the Grandma Dowdel during the summer. Each time they go visit their Grandma Dowdel they learn to love and appreciate their Grandma. They had a Twelve-gauge double-barreled Winchester Model 21, that was a shotgun. They had a biplane that was a winged aircraft. There were two wings stacked. They sat with the dead body through the night before the burial.They always had a Centennial celebration where they had a contest to see which family had the most talent.They also had pie contests. She waits for them to steal something and then she catches them. Their Grandma Dowdel gets into a competition with Mrs, Weidenbach family and they see which family has the most talent. In 1942-” The Troop train”Joey is Joining the Army Air Corps. Joey sends a telegram to his Grandma Dowdel and tells her that he is going to past her house. He near his Grandma Dowdel house and sees her waving at each car, because she was hoping that Joey would wave back at her. Joey sees his Grandma, he waves back, and then he is off to go fight in World War
