Book Review On Peace Like A River

In this year's literature class we have read a number of very good books. A few thrilling, gothic classics such as: Frankenstein, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I read my first book by famous author Charles Dickens, Great Expectations. To put it nicely, I was not a huge fan of this one, but I definitely appreciate it and am glad that I read it. Another book we read was Leif Enger's Peace Like A River. Peace Like A River was my favorite book of the year, and one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Fahrenheit 451 and The Pearl are two books we also read this year. Now with all of these books, there are so many rich, layered and complex characters. Characters I loved, quite a few that I wasn't very fond of, and characters

In the book Peace like a River how hands are described represent the characters souls. How the hands are described can tell us as the readers what type of soul or personality the character has. Reuben describes Roxana's hands as looking like they have done hard work. On page 179 he says “Roxanna Crawley was standing there looking thirsty; did I mention her knuckles before? This woman had worked.”…

As this chapter illustrates, Finny enjoys getting himself into tight (and sometimes dangerous) situations, and he relies on his natural charm and often illogical view of the world to extricate himself. While military service overtakes the older students, only the 16-year-old boys remain careless and happy in this peaceful world. For the masters of Devon — and Gene, too — Finny comes to represent the "essence of this careless peace." While Finny likes to defy authority, play games, and jump out of trees — all of these essentially childish activities — Gene, by contrast, wants to become an adult and feels that he should learn how to live in the grown-up world. His basic nature points him in the direction of conventionality and conformity, and…

“Emotions sometimes are even more troublesome than ideas. Emotions have led people to do all sorts of things…” According to Pseudonymous Bosch, emotions are the cause of peoples’ actions. In a plot, usually tragedy, the downfall of the protagonist is usually due to an intense emotion that caused him to take an irrational action. Emotions, therefore, can be seen in all the books as the themes such as jealousy, hatred and more that further the plot. Many books have some themes in common.…

One always accepts the world with which they are presented, and the same rule applies in literature. Everything in a work is filtered through the narrator, so that brings up the question of how one can be certain they are being told pure fact and reason, and the answer, although no one wants to believe it, is that the reader has absolutely no way of knowing; however, once the reader understands that, they become aware of an even greater truth: they will never know the actuality of any story. Literary works are filled with tensions and paradoxes, which is what makes them seem so interesting to readers. People are drawn to paradoxical stories because they can be interpreted in an exceptional number of ways, but what if the author took a simple…

My most favored book would have to Flowers for Algernon By Daniel Keyes. This book’s composition completely hooked me from the first few pages. Being composed of entry journals rather than the typical large plot, and containing excessive incorrect syntax intrigued me from the gecko. I managed to truly indulge in this novel in an astounding two days, desspite being pressured from a project. My emotions were completely rattled throughout the novel to the point where I was in tears.…

The choices you make in life can either lead you to great opportunities or leave you with deep regrets. It’s up to you to decide where you want to go, and how you are going to get there. A choice is the act of making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities. The possibilities may surpass your limits and get you far in life, or cause you to feel regretful and ashamed. In “Viva La Vida” and “The Road Not Taken” each author uses choices to portray similarities to “Peace Like A River” and how bad choices can affect you.…

1.Out of the required readings for this class, I really enjoyed the summer reading of Slaughterhouse-Five. Particularly I liked how Kurt Vonnegut wrote each chapter during a different time period because the main character, Billy, was “unstuck in time”. I just overall loved the story line and the satirical message Vonnegut was conveying about war and violence. 2.I believe the best piece of work I did in your class was the Most Influential Person essay on Ashlyn Harris. Out of all of the essays we were forced to write all year, this one in particular allowed me to express why Ashlyn Harris is so important to me.…

In the second part of Thich Hanh’s book, Peace is Every Step, he discusses the methods of transformation and healing. He touches upon the aspect of feelings and how we should go about to heal ourselves and understand others on a deeper level. The three main aspects he describes are dealing with anger, understanding and recognizing differences in others, and community. Thus, overall theme of part two is being mindful about our feelings while also being sensitive to other’s feelings around us, as there are times when we become blinded by our own emotions and we do not see the harm we are causing others. One main idea that stems from section two is how to deal with anger, and to do so mindfully.…

The extraordinarily detailed scroll named Peace Reigns over the River was created to exemplify typical commercial activity in a city during the Northern Song. This period of time was popular for its significant commerce revolution. Restaurants and food stands made its entrance into the commercial life and flourished, as well as vendors on the side of the street, creating a typical ‘marketplace’ for this area. Many of those various types of merchant and consumer interactions are illustrated in the scroll, describing the different organizational and social characteristics needed to produce such a busy, yet productive market. Zhang Zeduan, the artist behind the scroll, drew very detailed interactions between vendors and consumers.…

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone which to this day is one of the most enjoyable fictional reads in my opinion. The sheer idea of having another world within a series of books is beyond anyone’s imagination, but one woman had a hint of inspiration which changed the world forever. Nonetheless, the books were a success as you were immersed into the “world of wizardry” with Harry going on his adventures. This sense of immersion helped me to add depth within my writing and as I read more of these books I noticed that my vocabulary had increased too. I could understand what I was reading to a certain extent and as I look back on my early grade school years it is truly amazing how a child who reads can develop their brain to learn new things without even realizing…

Mark Twain is a great American author. In the book "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", Mark Twain writes about a youthful boy, Huck, in this book. He effectively shows the struggle that people of that era went through. That is just one of the reasons he is my favorite American author and consider Mark Twain to be one of the greatest American authors of all time. Mark Twain, his real name, Samuel Langhorne Clemens wasn't just an author but also a humorist, whose work is set apart by his mocking humor or biting social satire (Mark Bio).…
