The Anybodies Summary

The book I chose to read for the third quarter is called “The Anybodies”. This book was written by Julianna Baggott (N. E. Bode). I was excited to read this book because the cover looked very interesting and it seemed like a book I would be interested to read. This book is about a girl named Fern who was switched with another baby at birth and she lived with a very boring family, the Drudgers, her whole life. Eleven years later, Fern’s biological father comes to their front door and the families agree to exchange their kids for the summer. They go on a journey to find the important book that belonged to her biological mother who passed away and it may have fallen into the wrong hands, their enemy, The Miser. They go on a trip to find the book, …show more content…
Appleplum. The main character, Fern Drudger, is an eleven year old girl who was switched at birth by a flustered nurse named Mary Curtain. She spent her entire life living with the Drudgers and soon finds out that her biological father needs her help. She is a creative and bubbly girl who is also an Anybody, someone who has special powers, like the ability to change into another person or make things fall out of books. The Bone is a nickname that everyone calls Fern’s father because “he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body”. He raised the Drudgers biological son, Howard, for 11 years until the mistake was revealed. His wife, Eliza, died while giving birth to Fern. The Bone is a reckless man who lives a life opposite to the Drudgers. He is an aspiring Anybody who is hardly ever successful in transformations. Mrs. Appleplum is also known as Fern’s grandmother. She is her late mother’s mom and she is very sweet. She adores books and her home is cluttered with books of every kind. She does not get along with The Bone, but is forced to when she meets her granddaughter, Fern. She develops a very strong relationship with Fern throughout the …show more content…
Appleplum reminded me of my grandma because they both love to read books. In addition, Mrs. Appleplum is very loving and generous similar to my grandma. I related to an experience in this book when The Bone thought he wasn’t good enough but he needed to try really hard to achieve his goal. Sometimes it is easier to sike yourself out instead of encouraging yourself not to give up. If I was put into this story as Fern, I would be really confused and overwhelmed learning that all the unexplained events that have happened to her, have an answer after all. I would have been eager to leave my boring family behind and go on an adventure with a new person. Fern had to deal with a lot of surprises and changes throughout the

“Murderer or hero? My destiny depends on the edge of this blade.” Just Lather, That’s All, by Hernando Téllez is a short story that tells the story of a barber and loyal member of the rebellion as he is put in a life-changing situation; one decision could cost him his life or make him a hero in the minds of thousands. Molly Bang Paper When thinking of this assignment, I immediately knew which book I was going to choose. I felt that choosing a favorite book from my childhood could be a fun way to see the differences in how I viewed it then, and how I might view it today. As a child, I was in love with Mercer Mayer’s “Little Critter” books (and still am today). I decided not to go searching for an easy or popular book, rather I wanted to take one I know and love and see if/how Molly Bang’s principles were applied.…

I became literate at a very young age around one or two years old and people could understand what I wanted. For example, bolitas (meant balls in Spanish) cooked beans and no bolitas was refried beans. I had a way of commutating with my family but sometimes I would forget what the word was and I used to describe the item itself. They would eventually understand what I mean. Unlike one of the cases in Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy, I did not have a tutor or anything like that.…

Authenticity is the cause of diversity. It is the self-authorship that guides each soul in a different direction, developing individual identities. Charles Taylor, a philosopher of social sciences, claims, “The moral ideal of authenticity is that each of us find our own way of being in the world.” We find that way through undergoing life’s disappointments and achievements directly, not from handed down stories. In “The Dinosaurs”, Italo Calvino explores the concept of what it means to actively pursue an authentic persona in light of constant stories that challenge his character’s personal beliefs and opinions.…

Zora Neale Hurston’s Southern love story, “Their Eyes Were Watching God” is a beautiful novel filled to the brim with culture, introspection, and redemption. With use of Southern diction, Hurston describes the transformation of Janie Crawford as she goes through hardships of her three marriages to find her true self and real love. The 1937 classic itself is a reflection of actual events that happened in Hurston’s life where Janie mirrors many strong aspects of her character. A close reading of the text reveals what Janie has to go through, not only as a woman, but an African American, to find her singular path to self-revelation and enlightenment. Even though published at the end of the period, “Their Eyes Were Watching God” is considered to be part…

Each year, students are required to read books during the summer, as a means to keep you reading even while school is not in session. The idea of summer reading is a good one, however the execution of this idea is not as good. The way summer reading is set up at Renbrook has its pros and cons. One pro being the book, or two, that the entire grade reads. It’s a good idea to have the whole grade read at least one book in common to spark conversation, especially on the first English class of the school year.…

In this Action Research paper, I am going to discuss the demographics and break down of my classroom library, and the possible deficits it presents to the students who populate it. This is significant because the more a child is exposed to a rich and dynamic library of books the better he or she has to be fluent in both reading and writing (Tompkins, 2015). It is also essential to to remember that a lack of culturally variegated texts may have an negative impact on children. I will first discuss the context that contains all the breakdown of the district, secondly the individual makeup of what my school looks like and finally represent the individual classroom demographics.…
