Captain Nemo is the Captain of the Nautilus, and really knows how to live. He is the richest man alive, but less than ten people even know he’s alive. Nemo has a high respect for Aronnax. The two have many long conversations about how The Nautilus works. Over several months, Aronnax learns more about the world’s oceans than he was ever been able to on land. The Nautilus is very advanced for this time. There is powerful electricity, and priceless artifacts on board as well.
Ned Land and Conseil both wish to be back home, so they plan to escape. M. Aronnax does miss France, but still wishes to explore the sea. It takes much convincing for Aronnax to be apart of this plan but he says yes. The adventures are deadly as they go, getting stuck under icebergs, attacked by giant squid, warships, or indians. But, they plot as they go through.
Everyone aboard it horrified by these events. Ned and Aronnax complete their plans and escape. The night they attempt it, however, The Nautilus floats into a strong maelstrom near Norway. The lifeboat is torn from the vessel. Aronnax hits his head and is knocked out. When he wakes, his friends have found shelter with a fisherman. As they wait for a boat that can take them to France, Aronnax calculates that they had traveled about 20,000 leagues with Captain Nemo. No one knows what happens to The Nautilus, or whether Nemo still lives. Aronnax hopes that if he lives, the wonders of the ocean will live on with spirit, and remain a mystery to all those who don’t
