They never gave up on their son and painstakingly carved out a path for their son’s life. I really appreciated that Walt, Owen’s older brother had a struggle of his own when he was with Owen. He tried to get away with having a party by telling Owen “Not tell them. We okay with that? You’re not lying to them. There is just no reason they need to know.” (Suskind, 2014). His parents also used that mentality to get Owen to tell them about the party by saying “… forget about a party. We don’t care about that… were there any grils in the house Saturday night?... lots of girls?” (Suskind, 2014). It was pretty amazing because shortly after I read this passage a special needs child was refusing to go in after recess. He climbed to the top of the slide and would not come down. The other Aids were telling him that he needed to have lunch. I told them I would like to try and I went up and asked the boy if he was having fun and if he would like to slide down the slide with me. Then it became a game and we held hands going down the slide then walked into the school. I tried what Owen’s parents tried by not mentioning what they wanted but finding another way to get the answer. It was very cool how it seemed to work so well.
