Laila 's life in Murree is much better than her life in Kabul. She is safer due to the fact that Rasheed is no longer abusing her or her children and is now in the hands Tariq. In Kabul she was forced to things she wasn 't comfortable doing and forced her to keep herself shut. In Pakistan she has the freedom to do things she couldn 't do while she was in Kabul.

As humans we each have an experience that we never want to experience ever again, but we still have that memory. Veterans still have nightmares from their tours and people with an some sort of accident have those nights where they experience it again.There is no escape from fear, you just have to be strong and live on with the beauty in life. After the death of his wives and children he soon realized that not all his family is gone. This letter to Mariam does redeem his character because he learned for the loss of his family that he was a bad man and tried to fix his mistakes. The movie Pinocchio was ironic due to the fact it was the movie he promised her she would watch, and living up to the promise he gave her the tape but it is too late.

Laila 's father Hakim always wanted the best for Laila and always wanted other to have a great education. This mentality influenced Laila to be just like him. Her work at the orphanage is fitting because she wants her children along with the other children to have a better future than her. In the story both Mariam and Laila had bad relationships or lost both their parents. She feels empathy toward the orphans so she treats them like her own.
