Webber’s home and work life. The most severe of those effects, had the ability to impact the lives of others around him. As Dr. Webber is a surgeon, any surgery performed under the influence had the potential to not only catastrophically harm those receiving the surgery, but also Dr. Webber’s career-as he would’ve been put under intense speculation and posed the risk of losing his license and facing jail time. An article through ProQuest by Douglas Fowlie, The Misuse of Alcohol and Other Drugs by Doctors, “confirms that alcohol and drug misuse in doctors is a threat to patients” (CITATION). In addition to this, Dr. Webber was also unable to perform his duties as Chief of Surgery, therefor meaning that the hospital was unable to run as normal. This caused a ripple effect of disorderly effects throughout the hospital and its employees, thus disrupting the community of the hospital. It is important to note how the effects of alcohol, or any drug for that matter, in one person, can affect the lives of hundreds of people within the given community-especially if the person suffering from the abuse is a person who is relied heavily …show more content…
Webber’s disease had on those around him, it also posed negative consequences within his relationships. He faced losing his face, and the friends he cared about because of his choices, and he also faced effects to his health. As well as the distance and shifts that his abuse created among his family, Dr. Webber also caused rifts in relationships with coworkers, as they felt that they could no longer trust him or put their faith in him to take care of them. However, despite strain and the potential for fallout, Dr. Webber’s disease did bring out his friends and family and allow them to work together in order to help, and get help for Richard. This was able to show him that despite his actions, so long as he made an effort to get help, the people he cared for would always stick by
