Upon his arrival, bean quickly begins to glean more information than the teachers wish him to, and although they try to keep him under control, he quickly ends up manipulating them to his own purposes. After some time passes, he befriends Ender Wiggin as a member of Wiggin’s “army”(a group of students that participate in mock battles against each other.) the two prove to be a formidable pair, as they consistently defeat each other army, no matter what disadvantage they find themselves at. Eventually, the duo, along with a few trusted leaders begin a simulated campaign against the Formics.(an alien race intent on colonizing earth.) After a climactic final battle at the formics home planet, Ender defeats the enemy fleet and destroys the planet. Afterwards it is revealed that the war they fought was real, and not a simulation,(a secret Bean had already discovered) and all the children at the battleschool are allowed to return home. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of sci-fi, with the clause that they read ender’s game first as it is a well written book, and necessary for full understanding of ender’s shadow. Overall, the book is exceptional. The plot is well developed, and there are some surprises even if you have read
