Book Review: Caged By Molly Venzke

Journal #3 Caged by Molly Venzke was the most tremendous and unexpected book that I have ever read. The unique and heart wrenching book tells about a fourteen year old Elle who only wants to visit her older sister Skye in Greece for art school. On Elle’s trip with her father Jack they take a little detour for “a pageant” that Elle wants to be in. What Elle doesn't know is that Jack does not sell horses for a living he sells young girls into prostitution who don’t have a choice in what they're about to be brought into which is a new form of slavery. The title of Caged is presented in many different aspects of the book.
One way that it is presented is in a different kind of way, it is when Mama Aggie remembers a dream of Skye drawing birds when she was very little. Elle said that she “wanted a bird of her own” (Venzke 83), but Aggie said that “they shouldn’t be kept in cages they should be free to soar

The bird on the bracelet reflects something being free and unchained from its surroundings as Skye said “I want to be a bird and fly free” (Venzke). The heart in my own opinion reflects the passion of still living and going on through life even when you want to end it all which Skye starts to really think about doing. The cage is very obvious in what it reflects. It reflects something being confined and unfree like how everything in the world should be. In the book I feel like the bracelet itself represents Skye still believing or remembering her old life and how it used to be, and it in a way keeps her sane from only believing that badness exists. Skye throughout the book has no human rights at all given to her so she feels tacit like no one cares about her feelings or what her opinion is which is exactly how they treat girls in prostitution. That is just another one of the ways something in the book has reflected and represented the title

Its not because of the burning part its because he is the only one that realizes what is happening to the dystopian society that he lives in. Symbolic Acts Imagine what life would be like if you got the threw rocks at people or you lived in a world where people weren’t really alive, they were just doing their job with no care. People seem like they’re dead. That wouldn’t be the best society to live in would it? In the book, Harrison Bergeron, people had to be equal in order to have the perfect utopian like society. In another book, The Lottery, was about people who would be thrown at by rocks (if you received the card with the dot on it).…

The reader, especially if the reader identifies as a girl/woman and has experienced sexism before consequently feels empathy towards her because she is in a possession of vulnerability, where she has to pretend to be a perfect wife while planning her escape. Additionally, the determination in this woman may empower readers to do what they please, even if it’s discouraged by society. The reason why females will identify with this more is because they are more likely to have experienced sexism whether it be unequal pay, expectations or comments such as the one in the poem. Male readers may also be sensitive towards women’s issues but due to lack of experience the impact on them is likely to be…

“Yes, I do have remorse, but I 'm not even sure myself whether it is as profound as it should be. I 've always wondered myself why I don 't feel remorse,” said Jeffrey Dahmer, the Milwaukee Cannibal. In the US there are around 16,238 murders per year, averaging to about 44 murders per day. How is it in a society that knows it is morally wrong to kill a person that it still continues? I 've always wondered why this trend is ongoing and believe there is more to uncover about why the murderers commit these crimes.…

Towards the end of the poem, Bishop returns to the centralize theme of comparing her loss of certain objects to losing her loved one. Through the concepts of growing tragedies over an object, Bishop includes her “mother’s watch” to serve as an alluding factor to symbolize the things that she loves and has lost. Like the key, the watch holds great emotional values as its an essence of memories and love through daily life. However, the two items significantly contrast as the key held a more causal value compared to the watch, which held a more sacred value and meaning due to family inheritance. After the watch becomes lost, Bishop’s growing tragedy expanded and became harder to overcome as the item held a connection between her and the love for…

As a result, parents should be the best they can be. Whenever one is startled, or caught off-guard, the innate human response is to either flee or fight. Most human brains are wired to run from danger. This runs parallel to when humans are faced with a problem or a difficult situation. Many individuals would rather run away from problems than work at resolving them. The novel “Things That Fly” by Douglas Coupland conveys the themes of Escape as well as The Human Condition in his short story by utilizing the symbols of Superman, the narrator’s messy apartment, and birds’ ability to fly.…

Terrance Hayes has written a series of sonnets all titled “American Sonnet for My Past and Future Assassin.” Each poem is completely different, but all contain critiques of racial injustice in the US. Hayes centers his sonnets around two questions: Who is the assassin? and What is an American sonnet? In “American Sonnet for My Past and Future Assassin[I lock you in an American sonnet that is part prison],” the answer to the first question is the white hierarchy and shows the complex relationship Hayes feels towards them.…

The Little Prisoner by Jane Elliott This book was a powerful if not over powering story of a child whose step father abused her on every level of abuse; physical, mental, sexual, and emotional. The author of this book Jane, a pseudonym for the actual child, made the book come full circle. It started in the court room and was brought back to that pivotal moment when she is forced to face her attacker as an adult. It shows the reader the reaction of someone who clearly has no understanding the effects the child abuse Jane endured because the officer treated her like she was overreacting.…
