Horror strikes Samuel, when he is told that his daughter, Mercy, Tituba, and Abigail will be listed as a witch by the townsmen people. Strangely, Betty wakes up all of a sudden and accuses Abigail of performing crazy rituals like drinking blood and planning to kill the Proctor’s wife. In order to not be listed as witches, Abigail tells the girls to lie about the ritual. Betty again passes out moments after Abigail’s plan. Everyone leaves the room except Betty and Abigail while John enters the room. John suspects Abigail as the main culprit in causing Betty to go unconscious. Moments later, as the Parishioners are singing a religious tune, Betty wakes up screaming and covers her ears. Many believed this to be the devil spirit being offended by the tune. A clergy member named Hale arrives to Samuel's house to examine Betty and Ruth. Samuel tells Hale everything that happened with the girls in the woods to Hale. Abigail blames Tituba for all the witchcraft performances relating to Ruth and Betty. Tituba surprisingly admits that she had affiliations with the devil and the people involved in witchcraft. Elizabeth tells John to go to Salem to prove that Abigail is innocent, but John cannot prove that because him and Abigail were alone. Elizabeth is very upset and suspicious of John, as she believes that he has cheated on her. Warren comes home later, and tells John and Elizabeth that instead of 14 people, there are 39 imprisoned for relations with witchcraft. Warren says that Elizabeth was also accused, but let of the hook due to defenses made by herself. Elizabeth comes up with a conspiracy saying that she was only accused because of Abigail. Elizabeth believes that Abigail wants to get rid of her and take her place in the house, due to an earlier affair that John had with Abigail. Clergyman Hale later arrives at the Proctor’s house to question the family about religion and the court issue. John tells Hale that Abigail said witchcraft is not the reason for Betty’s behavior, and that she is just a con. Giles Corey and a nurse arrive at Proctor’s house announcing that his wife and nurse Rebecca had been persecuted for witchcraft. Two sheriff's later on come to the Proctor’s house to arrest Elizabeth. She is accused for attempted murder on Abigail on the night at Samuel’s house. Mary Warren tries to deny Elizabeth’s arrest by showing evidence that Abigail's lying, but
