Decent Essays
Throughout my whole stay at NASA’s Space Camp we learned a great deal about space and the astronauts who traveled there, which really spiked my interest. When I first found my group we were all strangers to each other. Then, I feel after a few hours it was easier to relate to one another because we all came together because of one thing, space. Are night counsellor Brittney gave us these space logs titled “Space Academy- your journey starts here.” The book was filled with stories about space pioneers and how they made discoveries that helps the astronauts of today. Another way we learned information during Space Camp was by doing fun, hands on activities. Before, the last day of camp on Thursday night we did a trivia night about all the information

However, space technology during 1950s is like a new and unknown territory discovered. No real established laws or restrictions exist to stop such fantasies from becoming reality. This, as Mieczkowski mentions, makes people afraid and concerned. In October Sky this fear is expressed and addressed directly and indirectly. At first, people’s concerns are directly shown when they watch the Sputnik disappear in the sky.…

Sitting with my fellow graduates at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center’s Space Camp, I listened intently as Astronaut Story Musgrave spoke briefly about his phenomenal life. Musgrave never graduated from high school, instead he left his family’s dairy farm in Massachusetts to serve his country by joining the United States Marines. Serving as an aircraft electrician, engine mechanic, pilot, and parachutist, he excelled during his tour in Korea. For thirty years, he worked as an astronaut for NASA while moonlighting as a trauma surgeon. During Space Shuttle Challenger’s maiden voyage in 1983, he performed the first ever shuttle spacewalk.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

Through her use of comparison, she better explained how sending humans to space presents valuable intrigue, and with her anecdotes Roach shows the flawed, humble side of the heros in spacesuits; and by using an interview of the astronauts themselves, the author suggests that space changes humans’ moral and basic perspectives of the world around them. Her argument is important because it explains the worth of working to overcome man’s hurdles in order to send humans into space. Roach’s writing communicates that with every accomplishment out in space, more can be learnt about what it means to be human and how far astronauts can push the limits of their…

In the short story, “Life at Colony Camp: A Blog” was told from many different points of view, than the reader's understanding of the story would be quite different. For example, in the story, Soledad says that she is excited to take the trip to Mars. This might make the reader have a different opinion about a mission to Mars. Because of a fictional character's confidence, it might make the reader feel the same way because she only gives the positives not the negatives of going to Mars. Whereas, if Soledad’s mother feels differently about the situation because she is scared the something might go wrong, then the reader might feel that way instead.…

Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. At first I thought that it was like any normal 3- day camping trip, which made me extremely excited since I enjoy camping very much. Once I got there, I realized that it was a different type of camp. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing. The reason I’m writing this is because I learned so much about being open minded, accepting, and kind to other people and new experiences.…
