It discusses topics such as substance abuse, sexual assault and even less traumatic experiences such as love. Charlie goes through periods in his life where he feels he wants to throw everything he worked for away, but with the help of his english teacher Bill and his other friends they bring him up even though it might be in some unhealthier ways. Charlie has his own sets of family issues and throughout the novel there are important situations that occur which seem to give readers an explanation of how he feels. "So, I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we'll never know most of them. But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them.” (Chbosky 497). After the plenty of ups and downs in life this book shows people especially teens that it’s okay not to be alright, but it’s also okay to get the help needed if you’re not. In Charlie’s family he was close to his Aunt Helen who had later died. There were plenty of times where he would visit her at the grave in order to feel at peace when he was down. Chbosky makes the readers aware that serious and traumatic events had occurred between them two. Pain took over his life and he later on conquered his inner demons that had been the source of his pain.
